why are we not allowed to have different opinions than that we must mortgage everything to keep saban? There are other good coaches out there that we can replace him with. If he was going in conference to say UGA,LSU,TAMU, or one of the other SEC schools then yes pay at all costs. The only way we will face him is in the playoffs now
The math works out in such a manner that Saban has been worth at least double what he's been paid. Yes, Alabama should pay ten million a year if that's what it takes to keep Saban, because he's worth it. Others are worth something as well, but there's no other coach in the country that I could imagine coming in under the same circumstances and winning two national titles, much less three. This isn't about getting 10 wins, or going to a bowl game. This is about championships, and Nick Saban is the only guy out there that actually provides a high probability of winning those.

I think anyone that wouldn't want Nick Saban to earn 10 million, if that's what it took, either doesn't fully appreciate the difference he's made, or simply doesn't care. Remember, Nick Saban is only going to earn that money as long as he's the head coach, it's not like he's being given 100 million and told to do what ever he wants.

in 1995 gene stallings made $750 thousand, 17 years later saban is making 8 times that. in another 17 years are we going to be paying a coach $40 million a year. this is getting out of hand. if we agree to pay saban $10 million a year I will stop sending money to the university. some people may think it's worth paying him that much, but as an alum, I will not support that.
If I had to guess, 17 years from now -- there may not be "football" anymore......but that's just me, and more of a NS conversation....

On the flip side -- Cano just signed for $240 million ....... Saban at $10mil would be a HUGE steal......how many seats does Cano fill?

Just got a text from a friend that works at the Bham news. He said that there is a fairly authoritative report on twitter that Saban is going to Texas. It is from a writer from the Ft. Worth Star Telegram. He didn't name his name though. I am not on Twitter so I haven't seen the report.

He said that paper is pretty legit.

Have you read the financial analysis that was performed earlier this year? $10MM/yr sounds crazy, and it would hurt college football, but it would not hurt Alabama. He has brought far more than that into the University of Alabama in so many ways.

It hurts college football because it continues to escalate salaries that only a few colleges can afford, but so many are forced to pay. Most colleges and universities are losing money on football, yet their coaching salaries are going through the ceiling.

Sorry for the mini-hijack.
we could consider it a way of making their arses quit ;)

Here is the tweet: "Source close to Texas executive council of regents says Nick Saban will be next Longhorns coach."

FYI - there is no "Texas executive council of regents"

Actually, there's no report. A reporter for the Star Telegram tweeted a source "close to the regents" says Saban will be coach. He doesn't say if a story is coming or not.

The problem with the 7 mill or 10 mill or whatever is the unrealistic expectations from fans.

like I said, it may not be a popular position to take, but paying a college coach $10 million a year is absurd and my view has nothing to do with return on investment, it has to do with an institution of higher learning paying that much for a coach. quite frankly, I think $5 million is absurd but I have to draw an ultimate line somewhere. we pay him $10 million and my small alumni checks will not be coming in any longer...which by the general logic here, would be a good deal for the school... lose my $250 a year and get it back in multiples of revenue from football.
