Sports commentator gaffes

A couple of my "favorites" to get the ball rolling:

Verne Lundquist referring to "Crodie Broyle" and Alabama's maroon uniforms.

Several times I've witnessed this scenario:

A team is about to receive a punt and trails by a few points with little time left. The PR ends up getting forced out of bounds on his return. The commentator will say, "Smart move to get out of bounds and stop the clock."

Psssttt.... Hey, smart guy. The clock stops on change of possession.

(I even saw a football movie that had the same scenario. C'mon, are clock stopage rules that obscure?)

"This kick is returnable". Isn't every kick that's inbounds returnable?

The clock does stop on change of possession. It just starts when the ball is set by the refs instead of on the next snap. The clock does not continually run, which is what some commentators have suggested had the PR not gone out of bounds.

a team will be down by say 14 points with 5-6 mins. left and they will score a td....no matter if the have all three timeouts some announcer always says "so you think they'll go for the onside kick or take a risk and rely on their defense"......yeah most teams have so little faith in their d's that they'd rather just give the other team the ball at midfield even though they have all their timeouts

a tendency to interchange the offensive infraction of "fault start" and the defensive one of "offsides"

One I will never forget was Keith Jackson saying Ozzie Newsome was from Layton (Leighton), AL.

Duh, you need to score on every possession.

There's also a tendency toward faulty math skills. For example, the commentator will say a first down run gained 5 yards. Then he'll say it's 2nd and 6. I would think that either it's 2nd and 5, or the previous run gained 5 yards. But, that's just me.

Lundquist is terrible about forgetting which direction a team is driving. A gain across the 30 to the 32 is just as likely to be called down on the 28.

Thankfully, I don't hear "he's taking it to the house" quite as often as I used to. Dopey white guys trying to be cool with stupid hip hop lingo is doubly annoying.

Don't know who said it but I've heard it replayed on a sports gaffe audio tape.

"LOOK AT THAT SON OF A ...... RUN!!!"
