Okay so I just ran across this story. I think it is interesting. I went to elementary school in the earlier 1990's so I learned cursive writing. I believe we were made to write in cursive up to a certain age. Ever since then, the only thing I do in cursive is sign my name. I can write in cursive, but it isn't easy for me to do all the letters. I would have to look at how a "Z" was written in lower and upper case before I could write it in cursive.

Yet scientists are discovering that learning cursive is an important tool for cognitive development, particularly in training the brain to learn “functional specialization,”[2] that is capacity for optimal efficiency. In the case of learning cursive writing, the brain develops functional specialization that integrates both sensation, movement control, and thinking. Brain imaging studies reveal that multiple areas of brain become co-activated during learning of cursive writing of pseudo-letters, as opposed to typing or just visual practice.

My two year old attends Montessori and the triplets are starting in January. Cursive is a big part of the curriculum as they grow older, and I am very happy about it.

I just finished my last field experience and will be student teaching next semester for my MAT degree, and what I have seen in fifth, seventh, and eighth grade classrooms is a complete lack of handwriting. Not just sloppy, but practically illegible.

I write in cursive every single day of the week. While I know how to write a cursive Z and a cursive Q, I think they are pretty stupid looking so I always use the non-cursive forms when the letters begin a word. All of my children have been learning cursive handwriting in our public school system (Shelby County, Alabama).

I don't even understand why this would be an issue.

They don't have time or money? We learned cursive over a period weeks back in the 2nd grade. What else is necessary to teach at that age that eliminates the time or funds for handwriting?
