[h=1]Trump authorizes military strikes in Syria[/h]
President Trump announced Friday he has ordered “precision strikes” against Syria in retaliation for an apparent chemical weapons attack by the forces of Syrian leader Bashar Assad.During a televised address at the White House, Trump said France and the United Kingdom had joined in the strikes, which he said are targeting sites related to Syria’s chemical weapons program.
Loud explosions were reportedly heard in the Syrian capital of Damascus as Trump announced the strikes just after 4 a.m. local time in the Middle East.

Trump called last weekend’s chemical attack a "significant escalation" of the Syrian government’s efforts to inflict pain on its own citizens — something for which he said Assad deserved to be punished.

"These are not the actions of a man; they are crimes of a monster instead,” the president said.

Friday marks the second time Trump has attacked Syria for using chemical weapons. Roughly one year ago, the U.S. launched a barrage of cruise missiles at a Syrian air base in response to a chemical attack that killed around 80 people.

This alone should be an impeachable offense - Syria has not attacked the US, how does the president order military strikes without congressional approval?

I'm so sick of these psychopaths who believe they have unilateral power just because the were elected as POTUS.

That would mean the last three or four presidents should have been impeached. But, I do agree with you. I'm still scratching my head as to why we are involved.

Yes, and I've been saying this for several decades now.

Afghanistan is the closest thing to a legal war, IMO - and we still should have had the sense to sty out of there.

FWIW, according to the linked article, it's supposed to be only 1 air strike, per Secretary "Mad Dog" Mattis.

I'm in agreement though - wish we could just pull out and let them all kill each other. But I think there's some stuff we have to do, as perceived world leader.

But Defense Secretary James Mattis later said no additional strikes against Syria are planned.

"Right now, this is a one-time shot," he told reporters at the Pentagon.

First, chemical weapons are against international law, international laws were approved by Congress in the form of treaties, so there is at least a remote Congressional approval here. I don't think Trump is out on a limb in terms of his constitutional authority, even by conservative standards.

Personally, I am most afraid of Trump's ability to throw the world into military chaos, but I cannot agree in this moment with the above sentiment. He acted with France and the UK. There is actually a valid interest in deterring chemical weapons use. There is a scary but real reason to confront Syria, Iran, and Russia in the brazen use of such weapons. Trump is nearly the last person on earth I would want leading the decision making process in the moment, but as we say in poker, sometimes even the blind squirrel finds the nuts.

Not really perceived as that anymore.

Actually, the sentiments of the Nonsports board notwithstanding, this is wrong. We remain perceived by the rank and file of the earth as world leader in a major way.

When we did not intervene in Bosnia, the world was angry with Clinton. When we finally intervened, the world was glad he did it. When we did not intervene in other crises, the same thing happened. I would be happy to correct myself if it proves to be otherwise because I have no love of American imperialism, but I believe the world as a whole is going to be very supportive of this action.

Well, there were some guys a while back who opposed that political philosophy (imperial presidency and short-circuiting the constitutional checks and balances) and actually backed up their convictions with action...

Disagree. The numbers have plummeted. The perception is increasingly that we were the world leader that then lost it's collective mind.

There are still the trappings of it and the hopes that we'll find our way again. We have given up tons of soft power and perception that we may never fully get back.

I'm sure a lot of rank and file earthlings still feel that way but the perception of America has changed - and mostly rightfully so.

There is probably a bit of projection in that. There is a saying in Europe: "When the US sneezes, Europe catches a cold." What the U.S. do matters. A lot. Folks across the world may not like a particular policy, they they certainly pay attention to what the U.S. do and say. A lot of attention, although it must be said that since OIF, they are less likely to simply accept the U.S. perspective and do whatever the U.S. president asks them to do.
In this case, the UK joined in and Theresa May is not exactly a war monger. Even France joined in and Emanuel Macron is even less of a war monger.
European news (French TV5, BBC, France24 English and French language services) all week has been showing Syrian kids using inhalers and being sprayed with water. Russian TV (Pervii Kanal) TV has been showing U.S. Tomahawk missile launches from 2017 and arguing that the whole chemical weapons attack has been faked by the Brits to give the Brits an excuse for attacking Russia's only friend Syria. This morning Pervii Kanal is playing patriotic music with orthodox Easter themes.

You must get your news from the Non-sports Forum. I suggest you broaden your reading some. Note, the UK and France not only cooperated but participated. The Germans did not participate... because they are harboring x-million Syrians and don't want to get a major riot on their hands. Obviously that doesn't mean they disagreed.

My reading goes far beyond non-sports but thanks for the meaningless condescension.

Nothing you typed here changes what I said. Perception of America as world leader has changed. And it has changed well beyond the non-sports forum. It may still be world leader but we're talking perception.

I'm sure with all your vast sources of knowledge & reading you could come across this information without my help since I'm just stuck here in non-sports.
