Re: Tennessee vs Alabama

The actions of your "brother" made this great football rivalry into a quagmire of lies and innuendo to the NCAA which seriously weakened Alabama for several years. Mike Shula helped heal some of the gaping wounds and Coach Saban has returned this very proud university to the pinnacle of college football.

That being said, remember our mascot is an elephant and we all know how long their memories are very, very long. I think Butch will learn on Saturday just how much work he has to do to make this rivalry competitive again. Come Saturday, Bama will be going for three shut outs and it is very possible they will accomplish this.

Re: Tennessee vs Alabama

I remember the first time Tennessee came to Tuscaloosa in 1999. Even though it was a loss, that game marked a turning point of sorts. It was a sign that we were about to leave Legion Field behind forever. The weather was great. Bryant Denny was rocking. We got up 7-0, we were putting Tee Martin on his back, and I thought for sure we were going to end the streak to UT that day. But, then, Shaun Alexander got injured and left the game and we didn't seem to have a backup plan. But, it was good to play Tennessee in Tuscaloosa for the first time. And we are currently making up for those dark years! UT has not won in Tuscaloosa since that crazy overtime debacle in 2003.

Re: Tennessee vs Alabama

I was with my wife in the stands. When the ball took off, I turned and said "I've never seen a ball do that before." Of course, unfortunately, I had the exact same thought in the AU game in 2010, watching MI's fumble through the EZ...
Thanks, for sending me into flashback mode. I had almost completely blocked the 2010 AU game out of my memory. After that fumble, followed up by Trent's drop in the end zone, I looked at my girlfriend and said, "Time to go. Fate is against us now". I don't even like to admit I was actually there that day.

Re: Tennessee vs Alabama

It's hard to believe it has been 20 years since that 17-17 tie. That game would be the final tie that either Bama or Tennessee would ever have again. Overtime came along in 1996, removing ties from college football, once and for all. It would also be the last time that Bama and Tennessee would play on artificial turf, and it would be the last Bama-Tennessee game carried by ABC. I still remember that day quite well. It was one day before I turned 20. I was at work with all auburn fans, and they had the barn-florida game on the radio. The barn was on probation and serving a tv ban that year.

When Florida decided to take the second half off and let tiny terry beat them, I had to hear it from the barners, big time. I told them that I was recording the Bama-Tennessee game and did not want to know a thing about it, as it would be late that night before I could watch it. I was working an insanely long shift that ran from 6:30 am to 9:00 pm. I have to give it to them. They didn't say a word about the game, even though they had it on on a small, portable tv in a room in the back. One of them would run in and out and whisper updates to the others. But they did at least comply with my request and didn't spoil it for me. Probably the ONLY time in my life that I have not wanted to punch a barner in the face. So, when I finally got off work and got home that night, I got to see the entire game not knowing a thing. That is the only game that has ever worked out like that for me. Any other time I tried to record a game and see it later, somebody would always slip up and ruin it for me.

No offense to the op but I hope this rivalry is never competitive again. Whenever I see the Vols I get this uncontrollable urge to puke.
Agree with this. The last several years have been terrific with UT as a non-factor. Hope it stays that way for years to come!

1987 Alabama vs #8 Tennessee: "VOLS Shocked"

That was simply a UT butt kicking fest!!! RTR!!!
We sat next to a UT fan that night. Just before the game started, he said, "If you guys can't beat Memphis State, I don't see how you expect to stay on the same field with us." After the Dunn to Goode bomb in the first quarter made it 21-0, he got up to "go to the bathroom" and never came back.

The 1987 game is one of my favorites for personal reasons. My wife and I had been married only since the prior December, so kind of second honeymoon with this trip to Tennessee. We had stopped over for the night in Chattanooga on our way to the Smokey Mountains. That beatdown was not expected, but certainly made the stay in Tennessee that week pretty sweet. First time to go up to that neck of the woods, and caught the color change at a peak. Beautiful country up there this time of year.

That 93 tie was crap!

It really wasn't crap at the time. It was the best possible outcome in a game Tenn should have won. Last minute drive for a td and Palmer runs it in for the 2pt conversion. Being there, it sure beat losing.

1972 was one of my favorite finishes. John Forney's call on Terry Davis's td run is pretty exciting.

That looks like Legion Field to me. Lots of crimson for that to be in tennessee!

I don't remember this game very well but I recognize the touchdown animation on the Legion Field scoreboard. :)

Had overtime took effect just three years earlier, then that game would never have been a tie. Since that game 20 years ago, I have often wondered how it would have turned out if in fact, D-1 college ball had had overtime then. I could see us taking a 26-23 win in 3 overtimes, seeing as how we had seized the momentum. Then again, with the way Heath Shuler was throwing the ball that day, I could have seen a 24-17 tennessee win in one OT as well.
