when something is "yours to lose" it means as long as you don't screw up, it belongs to you

so in this case, as long as 'Bama doesn't screw up, he plays for the Tide

Cox wasn't really pursued by Bama.

Fran thought it would be a better idea to go after Avalos, who better fit the option attack. Obviously, that was yet another brilliant recruiting decision by fRan, almost on par with not taking any offensive linemen for two years.
