The price of gasoline - plus other general economic impacts - as it pertains to the upcoming election

Yeah, sad. It's cost thousands of jobs...
Bazza, the current low gas prices are a symptom of a sick economy worldwide, not the good thing you seem to believe.
Also far from the great thing for Trump he believed...

Gentlemen:

To be clear....if I could snap my fingers and make CONVID-19 go away with the provision that gas prices go up....I would do it in a New York minute.

If you go back to the first post of this thread you will see the point I am making:

The point I was trying to make is despite the drops in the stock market, the price of gasoline still remains a credible factor in how many Americans view the economy.

It is still my opinion - subject to debate of course - that there are many Americans who care more about the price of gas than the stock market - and as such - this may influence their view of the economy and subsequently how they will vote.

That said......we are a long way away from November and there's no telling how things will end up - with the price of gas - and a whole lot more.

It's quite possible the price of gas stays low and other things go haywire - and then the price of gas is a moot point.

You are missing it now, I guess. Other things ARE going haywire. The stock market is spooked. Covid-19 is underreported and still running rampant. Jobs will very soon be disappearing. No one gives a damn about the price of gas if they can't afford to buy a single gallon of it except for necessary travel or if they can't make their car payment.

I believe that has already happened...

They ate taking the short view, not the long view. They can more easily pay their bills now but what about the future.
Also does anyone see a way for gas to be cheap in a good economy? Do we have to suffer economically for gas to be cheap?

I'm glad he posted it. It's good to understand how little the cost of gas means when the world in general is going to hell in a handbasket. If I were in Biden's campaign camp, I would start researching all the most promising treatments and vaccines for the new virus and champion it. I'd have Biden's pic taken with the leaders and promise to reverse Trump's mistakes and promise that the government would never again be so blind to peril...

just ran across this and it seemed to fit here

Even though Aramco's shares are now publicly traded, the company is controlled by the Saudi government. Likewise, the Russian oil companies are effectively under the indirect control of Putin, owing to their owners being placed where they are by him. By contrast, American companies are independent of the US government and it would be difficult to impossible for them to engage in a price war, even if the cost of production were low enough. In a price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia, look for the Russians to blink first, once again because of production cost. The Saudis still basically just have to poke a stick in the ground when they want to increase production...

Just to further emphasize what's happening....I'm sure most of you know this but the math of the stock market is not friendly.

Lose 10% and you have to gain 11% to get back to even, lose 20% have to gain 25%, lose 30% have to gain 43%.

Also to add that the Dow is now where it was on June 1, 2017.

So you can essentially say that we invested $2 trillion in tax cuts for corporations in 2017 for.... ?

Man I was thinking about dropping a few hundred on some softball and NIT games but everything got canceled ... I guess I can now load up on this cheap gas that Trump's MAGA economy has provided. Ill probably get about 3 months worth of gas with that money I was going to spend on sports.

Easy to blame this all on Trump. My question to y'all is what are the rest of our so called leaders doing? I don't agree with a lot of what Trump says or does but he's not the end all be all of all our troubles no more than Obama was.
The airlines could have voluntarily suspended travel to/from China and other areas but did not, the media could certainly have done a better job of reporting facts instead of things that cause hysteria on both sides, etc. A lot of people/orgs can be blamed. But, China deserves the brunt of the blame and should pay dearly for it.

Well most of them aren't suggesting that they know more about infectious diseases than doctors who have been working on the spread of infectious diseases for several decades.

We were going to be in an economic decline over this regardless, but the reason Trump is getting hammered for this is because of his response and lack of response to this. Had he taken it seriously and stopped fearing the inevitable drop in the economy because its an election year then we probably would be less angry about it. But now we have a situation in which the disease is starting to spread out of control, and it took the WHO to finally get Trump to take measures that he should've done 2 weeks ago.

governors cuomo, dewine, inslee, and newsome (and i'm are there are others) have all done a really good job at the state level. and there are numerous public health leaders and local leaders throughout the country who are doing a lot to help. the federal government as a direct result of trump's actions (dismantling our public health apparatus and being completely inept in the past two months doing this) is making things much worse.
