Eh...I'm sure the local police and DA know better than I do whether or not Zimmerman should be arrested. But of course, I'm pretty sure the Feds will find some way to twist it into some kind of civil rights issue.

No, the fact that he was black and the shooter was white is the most important and sickening thing. Not that a human lost the gift of life. Isn't it amazing how the value of one's life greatly increases by the color of the shooter's skin? The fact that an innocent, 17 year old kid (no matter his color) lost his life to an utter idiot SHOULD BE the most sickening.

Maybe, but it seems to me that this guy was profiling. See here, race played into every one of his assumptions and actions. That would scare me if I had male black children and lived in this part of the country.

And now you're characterizing a part of the country based on what is clearly an outlier. This kind of thinking gets us nowhere.

It appears the shooter was clearly in the wrong. I would like some additional info bc parts of the article didn't make sense. Initial reports said this was a nice neighborhood with some even saying it was a gated community. Is that correct? Also they said they had over 400 calls to the police in the past yr. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have never lived anywhere that had 400 calls to the police, and I have lived in some housing projects. So parts of the story just seem a bit odd to me.

From the news clips I've seen...

• It is a gated community.
• The neighborhood has/had problems with burglaries.
• He told the 911 operator that the "suspicious boy" was black.
• The 911 calls I heard today included ones from a few years back where he called 911 about 2 boys walking the neighborhood that matched the description given of two suspected burglars in burglaries around his house.
• Also, one 911 call was from a neighbor who was watching the dispute that broke out after Zimmerman tracked down Martin. The lady tells the operator that the boy was crying for help, and then you can hear gun shots.

by no means am i saying it is justified. im just pointing out there may be more to the story... or not.

oh and btw. zimmerman is a hispanic guy, not a "white" guy. i know it makes the headlines a lot juicier but it is slightly different

Sanford police said Zimmerman has called 911 46 times since 2001, reporting disturbances, break-ins and other incidents. On nine different occasions, Zimmerman has reported a suspicious person.


From January 2011 to February 2012 records show there were 402 calls to police from that neighborhood, five were about burglaries, but a majority of the calls were about disturbances

Maybe, but if I had a black male child, I would be concerned. Frankly, I am surprised that you feel differently. As so many people have said, profiling is effective, but it comes with real consequences. REAL consequences.

Two things are clear...

1) If it happened as described in this thread, Zimmerman is guilty. (Though I am not going to rush to judgement.)

2) Nancy Grace should be given a restraining order and not allowed within 1000 miles of this case.

But I don't think he meant it in the context of this story. This guy had no authority to do what he did to this kid. He was told by those who had the authority not to take it any further than what he did. Guns, knives, mace, vehicles, forks and spoons are all effective. But in the hands of an idiot become dangerous.

Agreed - this guy is a nut, but some of the other posts in this thread indicate that he is not as much an outlier as we would like to believe. There are lots of nuts just like this guy out there. And when a guy like this is out looking for trouble, would you rather be white or black?

That depends on which nut you are talking about. They don't just come in one color.

How do you propose to change this? Seems to me there's been racists and bigots all throughout history. This is nothing new; no law or punishment will change a zealot.

BTW, I'd argue that the biggest threat to young black males are other young black males. Just check out al.com or any other large metro paper for proof. Both are absolutely senseless and sad. I wish there was a way to solve both issues but either will change in my lifetime.
