The Wheels are Falling Off

As of this AM, CMG has another year...

.....unless someone is willing to pony up the buy-out, and I'm not doing it.

I thought it was pretty well "known" that CMG's buyout is more than we'd be willing to pay to release him this year. Guess not everyone heard about it.....

Well, if CMG gets another year and has a bad season next year, all his excuses will be gone, and the buyout will be less. That's the one positive I see to him returning. I don't expect them to fire him this season, but next year he'll have to have a pretty good season to keep his job, just my humble opinion of course.

Not that I know of at this point. Maybe if the whole damn team transferred...

Even if, in a one-in-a-million shot, we fire Gottfried... we have another problem.

It's already April, and a lot of the good coaches on the market have already been snapped up. As late as we've waited -- plus factoring in the time it would take to fire Gottfried and get a replacement lined up -- we may very well be stuck with a guy we don't really want even if we do go looking for a coach. Not just like the situation with Shula, but something along those lines anyway.

And all of these previous guys have done soooo well since they left. Jukes actually played a little at Butler. The others...........

And Jonus can't start at Troy State.

You are correct that these guys weren't all of that good of basketball players who didn't have any real success anywhere else. Even Jukes has averaged about two minutes of playing time per game at Butler, and he's probably the best of the group. However, Gottfried is the one who recruited and gave scholarships to most of these guys.

So... why in the world is he handing out so many scholarships to kids who can't even play at all of these lower schools once they transfer away from Alabama? Say what you will, but that's his fault.

At the end of the day, it is Gottfried's program, and he is responsible for it, for better or for worse.

Hasn't he scored 30+ a couple of times ? Maybe he's a part-time starter ? Not that it matters since he's invisible on defense - literally .

While we're on the subject of past departures , did Haginas ever play again ?

Again , not that it matters but , for the sake of accuracy - Jonus started 30 of 31 and averaged 14 per .

Where have I read similar thoughts before? Oh, yeah! Here it is:

...Despite the fact that some of the defectors have been problem players, I think it is clear that Gottfried is at the very least a significant part of the problem. Then, again, any way you slice it, the buck stops at the top and the head coach is ultimately responsible for whatever happens with his team--good and bad.

If the players who left were "not that good," who recruited/signed them in the first place? If there are character issues, did those issues exist when they were recruited or did they develop under Gottfried's watch? Again, either Gottfried recruited problem players, or they became problem players under his watch.

Most people, fans and pundits alike seem to agree that the 07-08 basketball Tide was made up of tremendously talented individuals. If that was indeed true, then whose responsibility was it to draw that talent out of the players and mold them into a team.

...Bottom line: Is Gottfried more of a liability or an asset? I think we all know how I answer that question.

I only wish that Gottfried truly wanted the best for the UA Basketball program. If he did, I think he would have had Sexton negotiating an equitable way out long before now.

Being a good recruiter is the rack Gottfried hangs his hat on ... and even that is proving to be "questionable," to put it tactfully.

When Shula kept declaring, in the face of all the facts, that we were "so close," he really believed it. The same is true with CMG. Did you read Cecil's column this AM on CMG's presser?

I forgot he transfered. Where did he go again? I enjoyed watching him play. Bill Lambier without the scoring.

Don't know but , I remember him as being a liability on the defensive end . He was billed by some as a Keith VanHorne type of player . Clearly he was not . :(

CMG is a great recruiter. What he really needs is a good bench coach. That is what has been lacking in the past few years. A lot of his success has come when he had guys like Scott, Dunn, and Early on the bench. If he could find another guy like on of these coaches then the team would be in great shape.

I'm trying to leave this one open, so everyone can have his say. However, there's not any reason for just emotional venting which has no substance to add to the conversation. Those will still be deleted...

BL - I don't think that is a fair statement at all. You can argue all day long, that he needs to go, we need a change, etc. I even agree with some of the arguments, but MM has decided he should stay and I'm ok with that. That is his decision to make and he will have to deal with it right or wrong.

There are many arguments to get rid of CMG, but to say he does not want what is truly best for U of A is unfair. I believe CMG gets up everyday and does his best for the U of A. You can argue whether or not it is good enough, but I do not think you can attack his intentions.
