There should be playoff and why!

Teams such as Boise State, Bowling Green and especially Utah who go undefeated will not be able to sustain or improve their programs because their coaches will get hired for jobs such as Notre Dame. These programs will always be unstable if coaches come in for three years and then get another job. We need a playoff system that lets the top 8 BCS teams play for a national championship. This should equal 3 games, which should not have a big impact on academics.

Coaches such as Urban Myer will understand that they do have a chance for a national championship and should stay around for a few more seasons. These teams will never be able to compete for a national championship if the rules don’t change. Does any of this make sense?

There's only one thing I disagree with in your post. The line about playoffs not interfering with academics. That assumes that a 16-team playoff would interfere with academics. In division IAA, II, III it doesn't interfere with academics, why would it in IA?

If you are going to have a playoff, the schedule needs to be changed. If you want to have a playoff, then that eliminates the need for extra regular season games. Start the season a week earlier, play 11 games (8 conference, 3 non), and have two bye weeks during the year. Those bye weeks will be necessary for making the playoff run healthy. Eliminate preseason games, extra games (Hawaii, e.g.), and 1AA games. Reduce the number of division 1 teams to 108. All conferences would need to have twelve teams and a conference championship. The conference champions would get an automatic invite, which would leave 7 at-large berths. Use the BCS rankings (or something like that) to determine the other 7. The top seven teams not already in are the at-large teams. Also, have no bye week before the conference championship games and just one week after before the playoffs start, and the Championship game would end up just a few days later than it is now. It would be 16 games for the two teams in the Championship game, and less for everyone else. You could use current bowls for the first two rounds of the playoffs, and the BCS bowls for the semi and final games. You could also keep, say, half of the other bowls, and use them for the teams that had winning records but didn't make the playoffs.

I don't think a playoff would interfer with academics. The point I was trying to make is that a playoff would give most every undefeated school the opportunity to play for a national championship. This would encourage coaches to stay longer at the smaller programs since they have a chance to win it all.

It's all about the $. The smaller programs are gonna have to come up with the cash. A playoff wont change anything.

I would love to see a playoff with conference champions only. No at large bids. If you cant win your conference you can't win a NC. Independents would have to join a conference or not be included.
