This is hard to believe.

I find this story to be hard to believe. Jordan's vertical was 43, Vince Carter's 43 and Dominique Wilkins' was 42. Kobe's is only 38. Have read that Spud Webb's was 46. However, a 36 inch vertical is amazing without holding any weight to begin with.

I'd shy away from recruiting a defensive back or receiver with anything less than a 36 inch vertical leap. We disagree, I guess.

Jumping on a 36 inch plyo box is not a vertical. When you jump you can tuck your knees. I have 300 Lb HS linemen that can jump on this box, sans the weight.

BTW, I agree with you.

I was never a great athlete (D-II FB) and I was around 32-34. Verticals are just a measure of explosion, not athletic ability. There are powerlifters that can jump to the moon, but cannot chew gum and walk at the same time.

Back to the original point about AP: I DO NOT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!! :BigA:

This tale is approaching urban legend status. Tell you what: drop down to the "Y" gym, take two Olympic (standard) barbell bars, grasp them at the balancing point, and see if you can get close enough to anything to jump on it. They are in the neighborhood of six to seven feet long. They only weigh 45 lbs. apiece, so most tidefans posters ought to be able to perform this test.:eek2:

I agree! I work out with Olympic barbells and while I do believe that I could hold one and still get off the ground and I'm sure that AP can too; it is simply not possible for someone to get up 36" with them in their hands. Also, since the only way to accurately predict how high somebody gets is to have them jump up and slap a marker above their head, how did they know the height of his jump? Jumping on a bench that is 36" high is not the same as a 36" vertical leap. Jumping on a bench you can bend your knees and land squating down. This story is total BS!

This is extremely impressive, but jumping onto a 36'' platform is not the same as having a 36" vertical leap. Jumping onto the platform you would bring your legs up towards your chest getting your feet higher off the ground just because you are bending your knees. That's why a true vertical leap is measured as the difference in how high you can reach flat footed versus how high you can reach jumping. It is still borderline unbelievable though.

I just did it very easily with a 20 pound weight in each hand. I have no doubt that Peterson can do it with 80 in each hand. I am not in good shape at all. It's not a vertical leap, you swing the weight up like a curl and then jump, the weight actually helps you. FWIW.

This sounds like a story I heard a few years ago about Jevon Kearse, aka "The Freak"

Rumor goes something like this....UF was at their bowl banquet & in suits/ties/dress shoes. After it was over a couple of players & coaches began debating the height of a chandelier. They estimated it to be 12' & a couple of them began betting if they could touch it. SUPPOSEDLY JK walked up, looked up at it & off 2 feet jumped up & touched it. They later measured it at 12' 6". :conf3:

Another story about JK that I believe was in ESPN the mag or SI. UF was having early workouts -5 a.m.- and JK drug himself in wearing sweatpants and flipflops. They were about to lift or run, I can't remember, when JK asks an asst. coach "If I can touch the top rung of the vertical leap sticks, can I go back to bed?" The coach says yeah:rolleye2: & JK quickly, flat-footed, jumps up & touches it, turns around and goes back to his dorm. Those things are around 12' in most cases.

Not saying it's true, just related to the AP story.

I'm still not buying it. If Adrienne Peterson weighs 200lbs and has an 80 pound dumbell in each hand he now weighs 360lbs effectively. Nobody who weighs 360lbs and is AP's height is jumping that high with 160 of those pounds on his arms. Again, I don't believe that it was a VERTICAL LEAP where it is measured from the top of his hands. If it was jumping onto a 36" high bench it is believable because as I first said...you can bend your knees.

how many UF players does it take to determine the height of a chandelier?

He said that he didn't believe it at first, but that OU had videos of him doing it.That sounds inhuman to me, something that belongs in the urban-legend category. Any of y'all ever hear of anything like this?

I want to see the video before I believe anything like this. I think someone is telling fish stories.:rolleye2:

Most of you people must have failed miserably at reading comprehension. NOWHERE does it even MENTION vertical leap. He JUMPS UP ON A 36 INCH PLATFORM. This is not that hard to do. Geez!

I don't doubt that he could make the jump, but I do highly doubt that he could make the jump while holding 160 lbs. I won't believe it until I see it.

It's a fairly common rehab exercise. You swing the weight like a curl and then jump. It actually elevates you. As I've stated above, I've done it easily with 20 in each hand and I have no doubt AP is 10 times stronger than I. Try it yourselves.

I didn`t know they made junkies lift weights in rehab. Wonder how much Britney Spears can do? ;)
