Thoughts on Joe Kines (to A&M)

Greetings from Dallas. First of all, congrats on your awesome recruiting class. We were hoping to snag Damion Square at the very end but no luck. I think he was a very underrated recruit, by some at least, and will do well at Alabama if he puts in the work.

Joe Kines is interviewing at A&M today for the newly available DC position after Reggie Herring bolted for the NFL. Many A&M fans are highly disappointed that Bob Davie -- who ran the last truly dominant defense at A&M -- declined the job yesterday paving the way for Kines who appears to be the choice.

Just wondering what the Bama perspective on Joe Kines is. His age is a factor for many A&M fans who would have preferred a younger, fire breathing SOB but from everything I have read on Kines he is not lacking for passion.

Here's hoping that he works out better than the last few former Alabama coaches we hired ... Torbush and the other guy.

Thanks and Gig'Em!

I suppose if TAMU wants to go to an passive bend but don't break D that is loaded with future NFL talent they will do fine.I like old Joe,but average at best DC.However, good LB coach.

First, Joe Kines is a FANTASTIC DC and you'd be VERY lucky to have hime. Second, I'm a bit surprised as Joe has said time and again that he was finished coaching and he wasn't moving his family again. Given his age, even if he takes the job, I'd be shocked if he stayed more than a couple of years. With that said, you'd be VERY LUCKY to have not only the type of coach he is, but also the type of man he is!

It would be a GREAT hire!

I guess it's not suprising that I think you're completely NUTS! While CJK was our DC, we had a top 3 "D" every year and two of them #1! Did he play a bend but don't break "D"? To a degree but frankly he did so with UNDER SIZED and lesser athletes than our competition.

Man, do you need a lesson in defense and what type of athletes we had under CJK as well as the ranking of our "D"! CJK is a FANTASTIC DC and his record speaks for itself! It wasn't his fault that our "O" couldn't score points!

He may not be younger, but he can definately be fire breathing. I think the ESPN interview he gave at the I-Bowl a few years ago will confirm that. Otherwise, he's a great coach. Several of his Bama D's were top 5 in Total Defense. I think '04 and '05. He also helped put guys like Demeco Ryans and Roman Harper in the League.

On 11-05-05 TT beat your TAMS 55-17, totaling 627 yards. Less than two months later on 01-02-06, TT scored 10 points on JK's defense totaling 329 yards and losing 13-10. Need I say more?

I guess you get to see a lot of Texas Tech games out there. Anyway to put it in perspective, look what the a Kines defense did to Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl a few years ago. All we heard about was TT's offense, but Bama completely shut them down. They scored 3 whole points the first half. So I think the Kines "bend but don't break" works pretty well. Just ask TT fans.....

Thanks guys.

He is definitely on campus interviewing today. There are conflicting reports as to how close they are to a deal but safe to say he is the leading (and only) candidate at the moment.

Perhaps THE primary concern among A&M fans is how passive our defense was under the previous coaching staff. Some of that was dictated by talent and the overall lack of team speed on D. Addressing that issue is a priority for the new staff but Aggies will be pretty disgusted if the next guy employs a similar approach. Most agree that we'd rather sell out trying to dictate to the offense rather than sit back and get picked apart by all of the spread / pass oriented offenses in the Big 12.

Herring was billed as an aggressive, attacking DC when he was hired a little over 30 days. In fact, so was Carl Torbush when he came with Fran but we never saw that play out on the field.

Thanks for the reminder. :)

Tech and just about every other pass oriented offense beat our butts throughout Fran's tenure at A&M. In fact, it's probably the single biggest reason he is no longer the coach. He never fielded a defense that was capable of winning a game when the offense was not clicking.

TAMU Could do a lot worse than Coach Kines. He's a passionate energetic coach who is amongst the best in the business. However, as I am sure he would be willing to admit he's no spring chicken so I would look to have an assistant on staff that he could groom to replace him in 3-4 years at the most.

Good luck Coach Kines - in whatever you choose to do.

Kines had some very good defenses at Bama. Of course, he also had Demeco Ryans, Roman Harper, Mark Anderson, etc. when his defenses were at their best.
Coach Kines is spirited and tough. GREAT LB coach. He would definitely be an upgrade from anything under Fran. I think AtM could do alot worse.
