Agreeing with Trev Alberts is dangerous and distasteful, but....
I think I'll have to on a point he made. He was talking about the "BCS Buster" topic all the other talking heads were espousing, and trashing the very idea. He said that CUSA, MAC, WAC, etc., etc. conferences could occasionally field a good team and one that can pull the big upset on a rare occasion, especially early in the season. But let those guys play week in and week out in a conference like the Big 10 or the SEC (yes, he said SEC), and you'd see that they're invariably overrated.
UAB is the flavor of the week for beating the #)$(&* out of a bad TCU team. They papered Birmingham with free tickets (I got a pair in the mail, and I have no connection whatsoever to UAB) on a Friday night -- that is, no competition from Alabama or the Aubs -- and still had the stadium about 40% full.
They're a pretender, and everybody knows it, even them. I'd be shocked if they averaged more than 10,000 a game in tickets for which the users have paid full price. That is, not given away, not discounted, and not bought by corporations to give to their employees. They'd already be dead if John Rogers wasn't siphoning $500K a year from the City of Birmingham into their athletic department. Your tax dollars at work.
