With the recent commitment of Jimmy Barnes everyone tends to overlook John Parker Wilson. I know its very early (about three years early) to start talking about who will be the starter but is it so clear cut that Barnes is better or is it just the fact hes the new boy. I know so called "QB competition" is good from time to time but im asking this question from more of a talent evaluation point of view.

With all due respect to JPW, Jimmy Barnes is the nations #1 prep QB!

JPW may well be a good QB, but Barnes was the nations PREMIER QB last year and is expected to have another amazing year, this his senior year of HS!

I know recruiting guru's and their rankings don't mean much, but I have never seen Barnes listed as anything but a 1 star on the few sites I've seen and mags I've read. Where did you see that he was the Premier QB last year? Just curious........I hope he is as good as the coaches describe him!!!!

Would you rather take the so-called guru's rankings or the fact that he chose us over ND and Miami? I think I'll go with the coaches of ND, Miami, and Bama on their evaluation of Barnes.

Regardless of rankings and other schools offers, I feel good about Shula's ability to evaluate quarterbacks. As a former NFL quarterbacks coach he knows his stuff. In his short time as head coach he has offered very few quarterbacks. This tells me that he knows exactly what to look for and targets the guy that will best fit for our system.

Hey Root4Bama

If you read what I wrote I was not at all being critical of him. Someone made the comment that Barnes was ranked as the top QB in the country. All I was wondering, was where they saw that!!!!
Maybe you should think before you type!

Where did you come up with that? Perrileux (sp?) was the number one QB and he went to Texass. Barnes is ranked #72 preseason in the state of California, so he's not even #1 in California, much less the nations premier quarterback. I'm not poo-pooing the kid at all, but we don't need to put any undue labels and tags on the kid before he even steps foot on campus.

I've noticed the same thing myself. He's not throwing a scholarship at every qb with a big arm. I think you're also right in that Shula has been around NFL quality qb's for 15 yrs and probably knows true talent and potential when he sees it. He probably has the ability to go beyond the physical talents of a prospect and evaluate the mental make up of a qb prospect to tell whether or not he has what it takes. Kind of like the controversial "brain typing".

Not saying he does that but you can get an indication of personality types by just talking with someone long enough. Different personality types come with certain types of tendancies. My wife and I (for fun) took a personality test given by a lot corporate offices to their proseptive employees. It helps them get a feel of what makes them tick. We took the test and at the end it gave a summary of what kind of personality you have and what tendencies usually come with a personality of your type. I'd have to say it just about nailed me to a tee. It wasn't 100 percent accurate but it was accurate enough that if I was taking that test for a prospective employer they could get some useful and pretty accurate information from it.

I think that is an intangible Mike Shula has for evaluating qb's. Just think of how many coaches give scholarships to "big time qb recruits" who never pan out to be nothing more than a waste of a uniform, because they based most of their evaluation on how for and how hard the kid could throw a football.

If Mike Shula did that he would have offered a lot more scholarships to qb's than what he has.

Here's the skinny on Barnes....

He led Los Alamitos, a perennial prep football power, to a national Top 10 ranking in 2003, when he completed 155 of 265 passes for 2,246 yards and 20 touchdowns. - From Cecil Hurt's article on TideSports
Don't know about his ranking but these stats look pretty impressive.
