I think the blocking of sunlight has all to do with it. The fog is really a low cloud bank. You can generally see it, looking up from the valley. It's 81F up here right now and 91F in the valley. We are at 1600' even, so 1000' above the valley floor, but 800' below Cheaha, as 92 says. The temp delta is not just altitude. It's much more forested and surrounded by protected forest. It's not remote - I made it to a doc's appt this AM in 18 minutes - but many people who live in the valley and rarely frequent it regard it as remote...Thank you - and I imagine much has changed in those 37 years of ownership. You've shared some on this forum I remember. A common thread amongst all of us here are our living conditions - home and property repairs and improvements, and the challenges of those as well!
Interesting about the fog but at higher elevations it's probably expected. Never thought about how it would be undesirable but I guess the blocking out of sunlight might have something to do with it.
the pinhoti intersects with both the at and the benton mackeye trail. i think the pinhoti still has a couple of road sections though. They are trying to get the Appalachian Trail to extend to Cheaha.
Backed up to that preserve I can see why you get so many critters!View attachment 24946Here's a map of the park. The neighborhood is in white. We're in the upper right hand corner, where there's a short street which dead ends. We're at that dead end. In addition to the colored protected areas, the other areas around the mountain cannot be developed because of slope regulations, so the mountaintop neighborhood is surrounded by thousands of acres of protected woodlands...
are you near mccay's hollow? i know i've run near the area with your house, but can't remember which part of the course it was on.View attachment 24946Here's a map of the park. We've discussed it, but you've forgotten. The McCay's Hollow trailhead is about two blocks from our house. I've torn menisci twice on it. It cuts across to the south of our home and every drop of rainfall we have drains into it...are you near mccay's hollow? i know i've run near the area with your house, but can't remember which part of the course it was on.
looking at the map again, i see it. i mis-read the map the first time and got confused. We've discussed it, but you've forgotten. The McCay's Hollow trailhead is about two blocks from our house. I spent a summer years ago visiting a girl I had met in Tuscaloosa who lived very close to the state park. It was like going camping at a mountain resort the climate was so much milder. On sunny days this year so far, we're about 10F cooler. In mid-summer, I've seen as much as 13F. We rarely touch 90F. I think last summer, we may have hit it twice...I spent a summer years ago visiting a girl I had met in Tuscaloosa who lived very close to the state park. I have 27 relics found in the general area being auctioned at a national on-line auction house this week and next if anybody might be interested.
