Trent's Legacy

The difference between soft & smart is Shaun and Marcus Allen. Allen never took direct hits either. He knew when to hit the ground and when to step out of bounds. But he played much longer than Shaun did..and looks today like he can still play. Shaun has been very vocal in admitting that he didn't hit the weights nearly as hard as he probably should have. He did his damage on God given ability.

You beat me to it. When he was a UA, his aversion to the weight room was pretty well-known. There's no telling what his career would have been like, had he taken care of his body, rather than depending solely on his god-given talent...

I can see Mark and Trent doing well in the NFL and having long careers. Each will have split time with another RB during their 3 years at Bama; Shaun was the man. Today's NFL teams typically have 2 stud RBs; Shaun didn't. Those to factors added to Mark and Trent's strength should give them the chance to have a fairly long career.

The way the NFL is going, it'll be hard for a running back to end up in the hall of fame.

But Trent should have a special year if our OL shows up. The lack of physical receivers may result in teams stacking the box, and I'm not sure this OL can handle that. It could actually be a pretty hard year for Trent.

I've just given up on predicting OL performance. I greatly under-predicted '09's performance and then I turned around and totally over-predicted the performance of the '10 OL. Given that uncertainty, I'm not going to predict... :D

I totally agree with this.

He's already a heisman candidate going into the season. He's gotten the publicity and a well earned reputation as one of the best backs in the country. If he stays healthy, I think he'll be in the running at the end of the season.

The risk of injury on kick-off returns is something I have a problem with.
If Trent returns 10 for TD this year I will still not agree with having him out there on the returns.
In 2010 it changed his game after a few games,
if he returns kicks and it affects him as it did last season, there will me no Heisman watch.

Trent is the most complete back Alabama has ever had. I'd love to see him get 1000+ rushing and 500+ receiving. He could legitimately do it.

WHEW!!!!!!! That's a heavy statement, my man..Not saying that I disagree, but with the lineage at that position in Tuscaloosa...WOW

If we can prevent teams from loading the box, I think Trent and co. will have a lot of success. Our new QB is gonna have to take some risks for the sake of the running game. I'm hoping Carter and Gibson can step up as physical receivers and Hank and Maze can make some big deep plays. I think our QB is gonna have a little bit more...accountability than GMac did when he started out. We won a bunch of mid-season games with a hundred passing yards. This year, I don't think that will cut it. We're gonna have to field a balanced offense, we can't just resort to Trent in the Wildcat against defenses stacking the box. I'd like to see Blake Sims come in in the Wildcat if teams start loading the box and get a big completion. I actually think this may be the first year Saban lets McElwain be McElwain, minus the cute redzone plays.

Yeah. I paused myself when I typed it. I feel it could prove true though. We have to get the ball in his hands this season. His continual improvement as a receiver is a great sign.

No way would I have Trent returning kicks. Nor Julio last year. No way.

I think if teams start loading the box...that is where we will get big plays by swinging Trent out for a pass. There is no way a LB can cover someone like Trent if we swing him out. By loading the box they are putting 4 linemen down and 3 LBs and a S behind them. That means single coverage on at least one WR and most likely man coverage on Trent...which is a win for us if we use play action.

The best thing that could happen for us is to have the ability to make the big long passes down field after play action...and we saw AJ do this on many, many occasions in 2010. I believe with Trent as the feature back we will have more options available to us out of the Pistol formation.

It's very hard for me to knock Shaun, he's one of, if not my favorite all time Alabama players. But, he got in the dog house for a reason and it would be fair to wonder exactly what he might have been. Having said that, weights don't really keep you from getting hurt, in some cases they lead to injuries...

As far as Allen, that's not a fair comparison. Allen spent a fair bit of his career in his own dog house and not as a feature back. He was a third down/backup for a long time. That artificially extended his career. Marcus rushed over 250 times three times in his long career, Shaun rushed over 250 times 6 straight years. I think Marcus bought a lot of time by being forced to play a limited role for so long and not accumulating the injuries most running backs would. He's fairly unique in that such a talent was relegated to a reduced role for as long as he was. Having said that, his 16 year career really wasn't much more impressive than Shaun's 9 year career.

As far as Trent I think it starts with "if he stays healthy" and ends with how the QB plays. If he stays healthy and this team does well it's hard to imagine him not having a monster year and being up for a lot of awards and the like.

we have solid recievers; i doubt that teams will 'stack the box', but if they do, i think that we'll have a QB who can take advantage of that.

Can't argue with you too much on how or why Allen was able to extend his career. All I know is that it got him a yellow jacket and a seat in Canton. *shrug*

I still remember people saying on here that Lacy was better than Trent. No way! Trent is clearly one of the best true RB's we've had in years.
