USCe (South Carolina) opening/Kirby Smart concerns

With no surprise, Kirby Smart's name is being thrown around for this opening. As always, I hope we don't lose him. My concern is that this is happening in mid-season. This could be a huge distraction to our team and our recruiting ... I trust in Saban that this team will carry on though!

We knew we couldn't hold onto him forever. If they offer there's a very real chance he's gone. But not a second before he finishes his obligations here. RTR

Yeah, I don't think Coach Saban would advise him to take that job. We'll see though. It's only a matter of time before he leaves . It would be nice for him to take over the helm here when Coach Saban retires, which... is only a matter of time.

How come no

Nothing doing midseason for Smart - and speaking of, I would put the smart money on Justin Fuente - especially if Ole Miss cooperates with that line of contention Saturday.

I know if the next SEC job opens up, Kirby is gone. I would think Cochran would go with him, maybe Napier as well. The question is, IS the USC the right job though? I don't know if any one in SEC is on hot seat beside Butch at Tennessee. SO, I think Kirby would be smart to take the job.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Mark Dantonio coming to SC... Since that's his alma mater. I'm also suprised to see WIll Muschamp is not on the list.

I don't know if USCe is the best he could get. It's a tough job and I think they're going to revert to type without Spurrier.
That was my first thought. He can do better. If he's patient, the UGA job is his for the taking and it's a far, far, better job, with regard to recruiting and everything else. On their boards, his name comes up regularly...

Might want to change the title since there are TWO USC jobs out there available.

I opened this thinking it was about who would replace Sarkisian.

I'd hate to lose him, but if career progression is something Kirby wants then I think this might be an excellent opportunity for him. I have the feeling that either Bama or Georgia is his dream job but I agree with the growing consensus that he will need to already have HC experience on his resume before he is ever seriously considered for either of those jobs. Why not do that at USC E? SS has at least changed the mindset there and put in a good foundation for someone to build on, IMO.

That would be pretty shady if an assistant left as a HC and then poached other assistant coaches. Why would Cochran or Napier leave Alabama assistant jobs for USCe assistant jobs? They definitely wouldn't be making more money..

That's not shady. It's the way the business works. Would have made sense if Mac took a few guys with him to Colorado State. Cochran and Kirby are very close, as are their families.

Cochran I could not see going. Napier, maybe it's not about money but an upward move to a higher position.

I don't expect to see Boom's name on any HC coach lists anytime soon. The UT job may well come open next year also. Personally, as I said above, he'd be better off waiting for UGA than either UT or USC, which are basically both located in recruiting deserts. SOS's recruiting was OK, primarily because of his name and rep, rather than his recruiting ability. East Tennessee has always been a hard sale for AA players. They had some success under Fulmer, recruiting nationally, but I always thought that would eventually collapse, and it did. They just have no skill players within a decent distance. Memphis is closer to OM and Bama than to Knoxville.

I have a daughter with two degrees from there, because what she wanted was available nowhere nearby. Once, I happened to be reading a UT board and there was a post from a black grad student. He was an Alabama native and a graduate of Bama. The topic got around to the difficulty recruiting black athletes. This guy tore them a new one. I won't reprise the whole post, but he emphasized how much at home he'd always felt at Bama and how alienated and excluded he felt at UT. Of course, he was barraged with a torrent of outrage and denial. :) This is not to say they can't recruit AA players. It's just harder there and, for that matter, at USC...

IMO, Kirby would be smart to follow the relatively low risk example of Jim McElwain and cut his HC teeth at a much lower profile conference like the Mountain West, show that he can build a successful program, and bide his time ready to step into the UGA job when it becomes available sooner rather than later.

Alma Mater may be a factor, but Dantonio has it pretty good in Lansing; I like him as a coach but just can't see him achieving the same top-3 level of competitiveness in the SEC at SCAR as he has in the big10. Muschamp's absence doesn't surprise me at all - he's damaged goods for the time being after his flop at Gainsville, then McElwain stepping right in and turning the program around so quickly (PEDs notwithstanding), and his stock is hurt by association of what's going on at the barn.

If he gets a chance like this one (or better) good for him. He deserves it. I would be appreciative of his time at the Capstone.

...SC is a wasteland where old coaches go to die.

Or not-so-old ones, to wit Joe Mo (Morrison) and Sparky Woods, who was about 35 years old when he got the SC job after Morrison's actual death. But despite his own self-induced "death" Coach Superior may have changed the culture in Columbia and it's undeniable that the resources pumped into the program are far superior to when he got there.
