Wanted to give my take on the stadium plan...

I'll throw in more thoughts later, but we've always had cupcakes on the schedule. I think it's fair to complain about the neutral site games taking away a quality opponent at home every other year, but as long we have scholarship restrictions, it's unfair to ask any more of the players.

Students who get too many penalties don’t get the option to order tickets the following year

And, yet, we still have a ton of empty seats in the student section. Applying the penalty is obviously not addressing the root cause.

I can ground my kids for not getting good grades; but, if the problem is that they can't read or write, then the bad grades will continue. The punishment is not correcting the problem, no? Turning B-D into an entertainment mecca is not necessarily addressing the causals for the empty seats, at least in my opinion. As Jess and other have stated, it's just a money grab and pricing average Joes out of the picture.

If the penalties do not address those who leave early, they don't really work. Not sure if Alabama's do.

The student section is nowhere near filled - frequently. If THAT is controlling the students, then why bother with Tide Pride?

Jess has made some great points; but I also think a couple of other things are factoring in to attendance issues. One, TV. Besides the obvious issue of it being so easy to catch every game on TV, the games drag on FOREVER. a 6:30/7:00 game will run until 10:00 (or later); and, heaven forbid, those ridiculous 8:00 kick offs. By the time you're out of the stadium and into traffic, it's near midnight. Why pay the exorbitant costs of attending a game for that???

Two, scheduling. I've had season tickets for twenty years; and, while it's great to be on this run our program is on, when half of the home schedule is filled with Arkansas State, LA-Lafayette and the Citadel . . . it's just not a lot of fun anymore to watch the Tide beat up on these schools. Schedule one of these schools, okay; but THREE???? Come on . . . Honestly, for what my donation and four tickets cost, I have a hard time justifying my time (driving in from Nashville) and money.

To me, it doesn't matter what upgrades you make to the stadium, if you can't put good competition out there for the price you're charging people are going to push back (by not showing up). You're putting a great product on the field for the home side; but, who wants to pay all of that cash to watch a glorified scrimmage?

I understand what you are saying, and many people talk about wanting a tougher schedule, but we are at a level where there are only about ten teams out there every year who amount to more than a glorified scrimmage for us. I still maintain that a couple of easy out of conference games are needed each year for several reasons. Now, my reasons deal more with helping the team than worrying about what fans want; whereas, this particular discussion revolves more around what a certain segment of fans seem to want. Anyway, I'm glad the season is inching closer and closer.

I've had season tickets since I graduated in 2004. One of the smartest decisions I've ever made was jumping in to TP while demand was down. My original seats were in the east upper, U4 for years. I've had a request to try and move to the west side somewhere and finally was able to move to the west upper, U3 this year. Like some here, I am willing to pay a bit more, but I can't afford to pay the exorbitant costs that are being shown for the new sections/amenities.

One piece to consider here is, how are visiting allotments allocated? Considering the amount of tickets returned the past couple of years and again this year by the opposing teams, could some of the reduction in seat numbers be achieved by cutting those allotments back?

The student ticket issue has been a problem back when I was a student from 1998-2004, and has only gotten worse with the massive increase in enrollment. It needs to be addressed, and those that come and don't stay the entire game or use their tickets should lose them.

They should also do an analysis of the corporate or ticket brokers that own or buy regular TP seats only to make a profit. This cuts down on the number of average folks that would like seats or would actually use them year in and year out.

Lots of things to consider here, but this could go very bad and quickly depending on how they approach it and it trickles down through the TP regular seats...

To piggyback on Jess' post a few spots up, the University is potentially making a critical error here in failing to account for the fact that those condos are going to decline in popularity at some point, and the free ride of massive student loans with eternal deferments is doing to dry up as well.

I like the plans if for no other reason than it is impossible for me to believe the AD would do this without some assurance CNS is going to be around for a while. If he is here, the thing gets paid for and fans live with it. On the other hand if we get a recession worse than 2008 next year that can change things quickly.

I’ve predicted 10 of the last 0 corrections to the higher education pricing bubble...

Well, that is a different perspective, and I like it.

Someone needs to coin a First Law of Thermo- economics: "All bubbles break. It is just a matter of when."

Most of the SEC enjoys and supports their team and nobody else is on the level we've been on for the last 10 years. LSU, UF, SC, Miss St, Ole Miss, AU, etc. all put people in the seats with several losses a year. People still love their team. Agree we won't win at the same level but that doesn't mean people abandon support. Yes the trend is for smaller attendance in the stands and that is what the AD's are fighting. I'm sure Greg and staff know what they're doing.

I'm going to be a bit more basic than a lot of posters right now.....I just think it's ugly.

Outside of some unforeseen event, I think the first real opportunity for the "bubble to burst" is when the generation who is now in HS (possibly middle school) get to be adults and out of college. My generation and the generation behind me (I think) still loves college football and are in the prime of their money making years. But I do wonder if the generation that is now in HS and possibly even more so in middle school will have the same love for football when they get to be adults? I know I run across more and more college students today who simply aren't interested in football. They're into lacrosse, soccer and other non traditional societal sports. We had a young preacher fill in last Sunday for our pastor who is 24 years old. He was describing what he like to do in his free time. He enjoys "kicking back" in his recliner and watching soccer. This is a lot more common with his age group than mine. Most people in my age group would rather be shot with rat shot than sit and watch a soccer game. So are the younger generations going to choose to spend their entertainment dollars on other sports? And is that when we will see the bubble truly burst for college football?

Soccer isn’t going to overtake football or baseball in the US. I think it’s an overreaction that many see it this way because of the rise of popularity over the last decade.

Other sports and other interests do not have to overtake football/baseball for it to take a financial hit. Just reduced the amount of the pie that it historically represents by a material amount.

If football is to take a huge financial hit it will be because of the Lazy boy and the big screen tv not spring and summer sports. I just think Kirk Herbstreit deserves everyone’s apology after they laughed at him when 3-4 years ago he said attendance at football games was going down and fast.

Oh I have no doubt that will be a reason as well. You're trying to reduce this into a singular "thing". When in reality the more likely scenario of college football potentially taking a big financial hit is multi faceted.

1. People increasingly staying at home sitting in the recliner because of HD TV

2. More people being priced out of the live game attendance

3. Younger generations coming up who have other interests.

4.There are increasingly more casual fans "coming up" than hard core fans. Younger people watch games in pieces rather than in its entirety. What's the next progression of that?

5. Parents not allowing their kids to play football consequently reducing the participants on the college level

There's not just one thing that potentially could burst the bubble of college football. Right now, college football is fine, it's still a behemoth of a money maker. But I see things that potentially could burst the bubble in the future. Will they happen? Who knows? But there are things the powers that be need to definitely keep an eye on.
