We R Penn State

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

The 1978 Sugar Bowl (actually New Year's Day 1979) game in which Bama beat Penn State 14-7 and won the National Championship thanks to The Goal Line Stand is what turned me into a Bama fan. I was 10 years old, and though I always "pulled for" Bama since both my parents went to school there, that was the first game I watched from start to finish, with everything on the line, sweating it out all the way. It was truly one of the classic college football games of all time.

Then I basically grew up with the Bama-Penn State series in the 80's. Just about all the games were memorable -- Coach Bryant's 314th win in 1981, Bama handling the Lions their only loss on the way to the National Title in 1982, the officials absolutely robbing Alabama of the winning TD after a furious 4th quarter comeback in 1983, on and on.

There were 4 great games while I was in college at Bama. I believe we were ranked #2 nationally my freshman year in 1986 when the Lions came to Tuscaloosa and throttled us 23-3. The following year, Bobby Humphrey unleashed an overwhelming rushing attack in Happy Valley and Bama won big in Curry's first season. In 1988 Derrick Thomas played perhaps the greatest game by a single defensive player in Alabama history, and the Tide won 8-3. Finally, Bama blocked a FG on the last play of the game in 1989 to remain undefeated and in the hunt for the national title.

Through it all, the fans of both schools developed genuine respect and even affection for one another. The competition was fierce, but I've never detected any of the nastiness that sometimes accompanies big-time games. I agree it's unlikely to happen, but another long-term series would be terrific for both schools and for all of college football!

I well remember tailgating with the PSU fans in Tuscaloosa and then enjoying the game with them on more than one occasion. Great, Great rivalry and tradition between two of the premier programs in college football. I am delighted to see this on the schedule again.
Thanks, Mal.

oh and it's a little humid in Tuscaloosa in early September - so conditioning will be a huge deal IMO

I can't WAIT for this game. I have no memories of playing Penn State (was just hitting double digits last time we played) - so can't wait to see Joe Pa come out of the tunnel! Saban and Paterno - great matchup.

Penn State has always been one of my favorite teams. I guess, actually, they are my favorite team other than The Tide. What a great game this should be.

Welcome to our board.

Welcome PS.

Like everyone else in the Alabama/PSU world I am looking forward to this game.

As far as how it goes I dont see either team blowing the other one out. Bama has a lot of guys to replace and tons of potential, but so does PSU, so who really knows about the outcome?

What I DO know is that its gonna be a hell of a game.

Welcome to TideFans PS. It is great to see Penn State back on our schedule again. I think maybe some of us should curb our enthusiasm about our offense. It has a ton of potential and will be good for sure but the passing game needs improvement. As far as the defense, I think it will be better than most expect and by the end of the season could be the stronger unit.

I agree with this...I think we'll be much improved on offense also, but our kicking game/special teams is a concern, and it may take a few games for our young (but extremely talented) defense to gel. Of course, I thought this last year about our Oline and a newbie at qb and we did alright.;)
One of the biggest differences overall I see is the depth of our team...its very talented, and we're just now experiencing that type of luxury for the first time in a long time.
I do think the PennSt matchup could be bit closer than some on here think but I would imagine the staff is treating this game kinda like the openers in Atlanta the past two years. I expect we will be ready for a good physical game.

Oh and btw, to the PennSt fan/s....Welcome to the board. Looking forward to a classic matchup with you guys. I think most Bama fans have lots of respect for Coach Paterno and PennSt as one of the best programs in college football. Looking forward to a great game this fall.:BigA:

IMHO, When Bama and Penn St take the field, we will see the two best uniforms in college football. That is unless we break out the crimson pants or white helments.

Seriously, welcome to the board. I am looking forward to a great game. Watch us this Saturday on ESPN for an idea of what we will be coming to the table with.

Hello Bama,

With our spring game around the corner and football back on the mind, I found this site & thought I would stop by to pay a vist. Really looking forward to this fall's matchup. I think state might get throtled by one hell of a Bama team but I am still excited for the game. I will not be able to make it down but will see it in person when the show comes to Happy Valley. There is a lot of hype already building around this game and in my opinion Penn State vs Alabama is what college football is all about. Anyway is it true that Alabama is good enough to run the tables again? What areas need the most attention? What chance do you think the Nitts have against the tide? Hope to hear from you all. Later =)

Hello and welcome! I love Bama; but have the utmost respect for Penn State and JO PA. The game in September IMHO is what college football is about- 2 traditional powers going at it. As a Bama fan I can say to run the tables again will be tough. As for attention: Defense... very young; BUT talented!

Again, welcome.

RTR!!!!

Welcome to the forum! I attended two Penn St/Bama games back in the
'80's. You guys are a classy bunch of fans--I would only hold the Oklahoma fans in higher regard. That being said, I'll never forgive your officials for ruling that Preston Gothard was out of bounds in 1983. Other than that incident though, it was a clean, hard fought series we played back in the '80's. It is nice to see us renewing what I believe is one of the better intersectional rivalries in college football history.

All I know for certain is that I'll be in BDS on Sept. 11 to witness it in person. I can't wait!!! I believe the last time the two teams met was in 1990 and we lead the all time series 7-5. I hope it's a great game with lots of excitement, and of course that Bama wins. :-)

Hey Paternostate, what can you tell us about the 2010 version of the Nittany Lions ? You guys are starting a new QB right ? Who are the returning starters that we should watch for ? Any fresh faces you are expecting to make a splash ? Do you have a good kick returner and return team ? That was an area that we were weak on last year.
I've been to Western Pennsylvania and thought it was beautiful. I hope both teams are injury free before & after the game.

Welcome to the best Bama site around. I have always loved this match-up and consider PSU to be my second favorite team despite a few games that have really ticked me off over the years. Of course, it is an extremely distant second, but I do consider Penn St. to be the Alabama of the North. You guys have a great coach, great tradition, and classic uniforms. I am looking forward to this match-up more than any other this year. I'm guessing that we'll be favored by a touchdown or so, but I'm sure that JoePa would love nothing more than beating an old nemesis. Roll Tide.

Welcome to tidefans and hope you stick around for some discussion of the upcoming game. I will be honest and give my opinion. Penn St has more worries than Alabama replacing lost starters. It may not be an easy win, I can't picture Penn St. rolling over like a possum, but I will be shocked if we don't win this game in similar fashion of our other early games against quality opponents. Upsets do happen but Bama should be favored.

^^^What he said.

I can't wait to see Coach Joepa in Bryant-Denny, hope to get a good pic of him and coach Saban. What I remember the most I guess about Penn St. is the big black high top cleats they used to wear. The high tops seemed to make the players look slower than they really were. I seem to remember maybe Coach Bryant having the Bama players start wearing high tops after the game with Penn St. so our players would give the illusion of not being very fast.
