Arizona's saguaro cacti, a symbol of the U.S. West, are leaning, losing arms and in some cases falling over during the state's record streak of extreme heat, a scientist said on Tuesday.

Summer monsoon rains the cacti rely on have failed to arrive, testing the desert giants' ability to survive in the wild as well as in cities after temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius) for 25 days in Phoenix, said Tania Hernandez.

High in upper 80's today -- lots of rain; our July numbers have been about average for Charleston, SC -- lows in the mid 70's and highs in the low 90's.
Being coastal helps to moderate our temps...if you want hot, go to Columbia, SC...sits in a bowl and the heat + humidity are unreal.

They should have had better sense than to name their capitol after a bird which burned up periodically... ;)
I'd have to look, but I imagine the "feels like" daily high has been as high or higher here than in Phoenix during all this. There is factual basis for "but it's a dry heat"

Strangely, our weather hasn't been as bad as normal.

Historic averages for Memphis are a high of 92°F and a low of 74°F.
In 2023, we've averaged a high of 89° and a low of 74°.

It's been hella humid, as normal, but the heat itself really hasn't been bad at all here this year.

About the same over here. We've had much, much worse. Of course, we've had it easier here on the mountaintop. High today was 84 and the hottest it's been was 88. We never hit 90 last year...
