Weather thread...

Yesterday morning my wife went to the store to get her weekly groceries. She got home around noon and left for count at our church since she is the financial secretary. Before she got to the church, a thunderstorm with 40-50 mph winds blew up and we lost power at our house. The cause of losing power was a utility pole on our circle got broken half in two. Power came back on last night after 11 PM. We lost all our new groceries plus whatever perishables we already had in the fridges. The freezer sections seem OK because everything is still frozen.

Sorry to hear this Big Joe.

I guess you don't have a portable generator?

Most of us in Florida do have some kind of backup plan due to the hurricanes we get and along with them the power outages.

I also feel that it's a good idea to have one no matter where you live, given the weather scenarios we are seeing played out around the globe these days.

Philosophically speaking - it's all about being as independent as you can.

I've posted before that beyond that - I steadfastly believe in having backups for my backups. Plan A, B, and C.

Contingency plans as much as makes sense for a given situation.

With all that said, I KNOW I am still vulnerable to the weather.

There's all kinds of generators on the market - and for us on the East Coast - now is the time to buy. Before there's a huge demand due to an emergency.

Food for thought, NPI!

Heat warnings continue here--highs in the high 90s, coupled with high humidity--we've had about 4.5" of rain in the past two weeks.
98 forecast for the valley here in HSV. On the mountain, we hit 87 yesterday. Usually, we don't make 90, didn't last summer, but today has a good chance. Supposed to have a cold front tomorrow and a drop of about 10 degrees in highs...

it supposed to be cooler here in Atlanta midweek. probably going to bike everyday that I can
I've not tracked the temps in Atl (just glanced at Houston - whew!) but we've been about average here, which is pretty warm (current heat index is ~105° here at 11:21AM).

That said, I think I've grown more accustomed to the heat as I've gotten older as I don't find our temps particularly bothersome, as I once loathed anything over 90°. Now I'm out exercising in it for at least 90 minutes every day, plus yard work, etc (I typically wear my ruck while mowing, free adversity), so maybe I've acclimated more?

If you're still contemplating moving back to Florida, you'd better be...

You're right. I've learned my lesson this time and will get one for the house soon.
