What Made You Become an Alabama Fan???

In 2001 Coach Murphy gave my daughter a scholarship to play softball at The
U of A. Five years, two Womens College World Series, and many, many football games later, there is and never will be any other team for me.

:BigA: RTR!

This guy right here, in about this time of my life, made it impossible not to be a Bama fan.

Coach Bryant Video

Of course growing up with the red clay of Madison County between my toes had a little to do with it also. Didn't have much choice.

I love how he gives credit to everyone from the band to the news media.

Dad is a UA grad, i was born in Tuscaloosa while he was in school (1962). Followed in his footsteps in 1980. My dad passed away a few years ago but my fondest memories are of watching Bama games with Pop! I still get teary eyed before every game thinking of my dad and our love of Bama Football!

ROLL TIDE!

Having been born in Mississippi to parents who were MSU fans, most would have thought I'd become a Dawg fan - NOT! I was introduced to the greatness of Bama by my future brother-in-law (he's been married to my sister for 32 years now). He ate, slept, and breathed - and still does - anything and everything Bama - he taught me well  Like all of you, there is no other team for me - will be a fan until I die. :BigA:

I moved to Greensboro, AL from TN when I was in the third grade. I came from a non-sports family, but for some reason I loved sports, I would spend Saturdays watching football by myself I would just pick a team to cheer for. I would pick AL and then in the the 6th grade my math teacher was a new Auburn grad I hated her class - We would get extra points for picking who would win Auburn or AL I always picked AL - got me through 6th grade math. I Still dislike math and Auburn football.

My dad got his Masters & Ed.S. from Bama when I was 1-3 years old. We lived in Rose Towers and my mom says I would always say that I was going to go be a "Bama boy" when I got older. ... and I was and am. Needless to say, I'm not very understanding of anyone who chooses otherwise :)

I wasn't born into Bama, but grew up with it - all around me. In my home state, Ole Miss and MS State were regularly stomped by Bama during the 70's. The big memory was of sports writers bemoaning the fact that Coach Bryant would claim injuries had gotten the team down, saying the team hadn't been playing well lately, and then Bama would go out and beat somebody 48-0. Bama would often pull their starters after a big lead and you couldn't tell the difference between the second and third stringers and the starters. Those teams were that good!

Growing up, my Dad was always a Bear Bryant fan. He'd say "How would you like to go to college and play for The Bear?"

I remember one of the first times I really pulled for Bama was in 1984 against Penn State in a game that went down to the wire and The Tide eeked out a victory. From that point on, I became a casual Bama fan. My stepdaughter graduated from Bama in 2001, and that's around the time I joined TideFans. Been more than a casual fan since.

I've stated this before; being a USM fan (went there in the late 70's-early 80's), I appreciate ya'll keeping me around.

My story is a testament to making a good impression on a young person. I was only about 9-10 y.o. when I began to notice the barners in my hometown making fun of Bama fans all the time. It was a barn town to begin with, and it was in the middle of Ears Whitworth's short, painful tenure at the U. You can imagine.

But a wonderful young boys' SS teacher of mine was a big Tide alum/supporter and was one of the most gracious men I ever knew. He took me to my first game at Ladd Stadium in Mobile Bama vs Tulane in '61.

He taught us the better way, on two counts: faith in Christ and the right team/university to love. I am eternally indebted to him for his kindnesses to me. I never forgot.

The lesson here is that youngsters notice you and how you carry yourself. What kind of impression are you making on a potential Bama fan?

Oh, and take some kid(s) to a game sometime who otherwise couldn't go. You'll be making a positive mark on a kid's life...

(Thanks, RGK, Jr. I'm so looking forward to seeing you in heaven and to thank you for all you did for me.)

My Dad graduated from the University of Alabama, and once my brother and I came along, the whole family would make the trip from Huntsville to Tuscaloosa many times a year to see the Tide play. I've been an Alabama fan since then because of the great memories I have of those trips. Plus, I remember watching Coach Bryant on the sidelines during the last few years he was there. Once it was time for me to go to college, there was no question about where I wanted to go. I graduated from Alabama in 1998. I'm pretty far away now out here in Dallas, and I haven't seen the Tide since the 2005 Cotton Bowl, but I will always be an Alabama fan, since that is where I went to school, but mostly because of the great memories I have of those family trips to Tuscaloosa when I was little.

My family moved from Pennsylvania to Birmingham, Alabama when I was 11 years old. I couldn't help but notice at school the first thing the other kids asked me was "What's your name?" ...followed by "Where're you from?" The third question was, "Are you for Bama or Auburn?" When I answered "Penn State", the Bama fans responded with respect. The Auburn fans didn't seem to know who we were. Of course I had heard of Bear Bryant, but really didn't know a lot about him or the Crimson Tide. I befriended a guy who was an avid Bama fan. Thanks to him I learned about the great tradition at Bama at an early age. And I actually got to see Coach Bryant in action. Alabama became a part of me. I still to this day love JoePa and my Nittany Lions and I pull for them in the Big 10, but my heart belongs to Bama and I bleed crimson.

My Dad was a big Bama fan, I spent many a Saturday wih him and various uncles and cousins glued to an AM radio listening to the games.

I've told this story here before but I remember when we were in Huntsville in the mid 60's and he'd drive around on the interstate until we could pick up a station and sit on the side of the freeway and listen to the game.

Our entire family were Tide fans so I guess you could say it's in my blood

On a side note, a true story:
When I was stationed in England I worked for a Captain who was as big a
Tide fan as me. He postponed his wedding for three months until his 'barner fiance converted he said there would be no marrying a "barner, his wife confirmed and is much happier now. A good man he was.

1978 Goal Line Stand vs. Penn State.....made me a believer and I've kept the faith ever since! Still my favorite game!

Roll Ride!:BigA:

I went to ole miss and then transfered to Alabama. The people at ole miss were such snobbs and after going to Alabama one can't help but be an Alabama Fan.:biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2:

was it a certain game or player??? my father is a barner (i call him that he dosent really root for A team tho) but for me it had to have been around '89, or '90...i was watching bama play...sombody...and siran stacy did it for me....we were getting shalacked too but siran was running like crazy over whomever we were playing...from that point on, ive been a stan

I grew up in Illinois and HATED football. When I moved to Tuscaloosa in 1998 my friends tried to get me to go to the games with them and I wouldn't have any part in it. I finally went to the 1999 Bama/Mississippi State game and wintessed Alabama seal up the trip to Atlanta for the SEC Champhionship. I haven't missed a home game since and rarely miss the road games!

Mine is a little complicated.

I was born October 28, 1969 to a poor military couple stationed at Craig Air Force Base in Selma. I moved to Mississippi in 1971. We kept moving and in the late summer of 1978, we moved to Illinois.

I was just becoming a sports fan. My grandfather - who had been recruited to play at Ga Tech in 1928 but never finished high school - took me to my first Braves game in 1977, and I aligned with the Falcons, Hawks, and Flames (before they moved to Calgary) as well.

I was on the school bus with an 'Ole Miss Rebels' football we had just found in the old trailer and was taking to school for show and tell. My next-door-neighbor also happened to be from Mississippi - in fact, they were stationed at the same base at the same time. So he asked me where I was 'from.'

And to me, I was always 'from' Alabama even if I didn't remember living there. He then proceeded to tell me that the 'Ole Miss Rebels' and 'Mississippi people' were better than my stock. Only in the fourth grade, I offered to whip his tail when we got off the bus - taking it as a personal affront.

So I guess you could say it's because I was born with it and didn't know any other way. It just took a decade to come out. I checked the sports pages that week and it was the week we lost to USC in 1978. But we stayed high in the polls.

The first time I ever saw Alabama on TV was the 1979 Sugar Bowl. I truly didn't know what an accomplishment the goal line stand was.

I just expected us to win.
