When should you ice the kicker?

I haven't heard this discussed by anyone on this forum, but I didn't really understand Tuberville's logic against LSU. LSU has a kick to tie with about 2 minutes left....the barn has 1 timeout. He uses it to ice the kicker. LSUs kicker makes the kick, AU commences to drive down the field and has a long kick to win. But of course Vaughn would have probably choked from any distance  . So, my question is...."Why not keep the timeout if you plan on driving down the field for a game winning score if the first kick was made?" Is there something wrong with my logic? I get the feeling that if Shula had made the same move, the state media (or lack thereof) would be crying bloody murder....

Depends on the situation. How good is the LSU kicker, and how long a kick was it? In Aub's case, I probably would have saved the timeout for the final drive. If the situation had been reversed, given Vaughn's struggles, I would have iced him with my last TO, making him think and think and think about that FG.
