Which True Freshmen Will Play This Year??

I figured I'll ask it again.

How many will see the field, and which ones?

Also, is Andre Smith going to start .vs. Hawaii?? Is he that good to come in and start game 1 as a true freshman?

Besides Andre, which true freshman will have the biggest impact?

I see Earl Alexander, Mike Mccoy, and Stover having an impact at the thin WR spot. Bama is fairly deep on defense so I don't see much happening on that side of the ball. I think that A Smith, Pharr, and Ross can potentially see a good amount of playing time on the OL

My guess on the true freshmen that will play:

Andre Smith
Mike McCoy
Justin Woodall
Nakita Stover (Sophomore but a 2006 signee)
Arenas or Grant (One will have an opportunity to return kicks)
Earl Alexander (If he plays WR)
David Ross ???????

In an interview that Shula had at a gold tournament a couple of months ago, he said he expects 5 or 6 true freshmen to play this year.

How soon Andre Smith plays and how much has been a hot topic here. I don't think he will get the start against Hawaii, but I think he will be the starter by the fourth or fifth game if he is in shape. I think he will need to lose a few pounds for division I college football.

TRUE fr.

OL - A.Smith
WR - McCoy
Ret - Arenas
RB - Ford or Grant

S - Burnthall
st/S - A.Davis

Wildcard
If we were to have a catastrophy ..... J.Jones played WR until his sr. year and something tells me he just might have a decent set of hands - like his old man . ;)

5-6 true freshmen playing sounds so much better than the [what] 13-14 CMS had to play his first year. Ideally I would like to see pt on the OL for Smith and Phar with a RS for Ross[C] Stadler{RT] and Motley. PT for anybody[3-4] who can catch-and-run a punt, pass, and/or kick. On the D I'm thinking we see Talbert and Higgy get some looks because of speed. ST Woodall, Burnthall, and Davis would make bruising gunners. My guess....7-10

I heard an interview with sparky woods yesterday and he said that Ford is not going to be there

also csw said that if he (Ford) did end up here that it would mess things up, but that it would be a good problem to have

Sparky didn't say that Ford was absolutly not going to be there, but they don't expect him.

Sad, for Ford and Bama. But, at least we are not thin at that position. Maybe we'll be driving a Ford in 07.

Something is bad wrong if Andre doesn't start. I don't think we need to go in depth about the OL.

It is a very rare linemen that can step on to a college campus and even prior to practicing be talked about starting that year. Most linemen have to redshirt their first year so that they can bulk up and build their strength on par with their fellow SEC competition. Andre Smith, has pure talent and the size to start. The question is: 1.) Does he currently have the strength to play with SEC Competition? 2.) Does he have the speed to play either tackle position? 3.) How quickly can he learn the offense? Once these answers are provided, then we can see whether he is starting material this year! But I firmly believe that he will not be redshirted this year and that he may become the starter well into the season.

AS to the question posted, my opinion is as follows:
Earl ALexander- as a WR and on special teams
Javier Arenas- Special teams
One of three LB's for depth
Mike McCoy- WR
Marquis Johnson- in the rotation at Safety
2/5 OL will work into the rotation on offense (probably A. Smith and D. Ross)

Any others really depend on the health of our team and whether the penciled in starters and backups continue to get better.

Another thing that must be factored in with regards to Andre Smith is that we will be playing 12 straight games this year. I know he's a freak of an athlete (you have to be if you are a lineman who won Mr. Football) but he's going to have to have the strength, endurance, and attitude to go 3 months straight without any rest. This is addressing the idea of him being a starter early in the season. I know he has the size and the quickness...but does he have the endurance? He's not going to be the best football player in the state like he was in HS. I hope he can contribute early and often...but I think it's a tad unrealistic to expect him to dominate on the OL on day one of fall camp. I'm probably one of his biggest fans...but we have to remember that he's going to be going up against some of the best D-linemen in the nation here in the SEC...which means some of the best in the nation.

Andre the Giant...I like that name...

RTR!!!

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Andy Davis come in and make an immediate impact with special teams coverage tackles.

In the Alabama- mississippi All-Star game I was most pleasantly surprised by Davis.

The dude is much bigger than I expected, He has a very atheletic physique, very good speed, and will absolutely LAY THE WOOD to the ball carrier.

I predict Davis will be quite the fumble causer.

These criticisms apply to anyone playing, not just Andre, and I think Andre can handle it at least as well as some of our guys I will not name.

Andre Smith- post from a HS coach observations
"Last Monday, the OL were doing a double harness drill. That is a tight bungee type rope with a harness on each end. Players strap in on each end and try to pull the other. Now, I don't know if this is good or bad news, but Andre dragged some of our OL around like toys on a rope. Fun to watch."

HAHAHA!

I would have liked to have seen that. If Big Dre is well conditioned and starting towards the end of the season...I would love to see him toss around LSU's new D-line. I believe Andre can make the jump to college...don't get me wrong. Let's put him on the left side...I know that's Darby's favorite side of the field. He broke some of his longest runs on that side of the field...looking back to last year.

Bring on the Rainbow Warriors!!!

I still think we are going to see a kid or two that is not expected to contribute immediately come out early. Some candidates I see are...
Milton Talbert
Jake Jones
Marquis Johnson
Charlie Kirschman
Charlie Higgenbotham

They say, [they being them] Phar reported in the best shape and the strongest. He credits Cycler training.

Coach Eyer says Pharr has "a good bit better in upperbody", while being "a little below Smith in leg strength." He also says Pharr has more upside, being smaller, with more room to grow in size (and consequently strength).

I agree. Besides the players I mentioned earlier in this thread that I feel are most likely to play this year, I would not be surprised to see Andy Davis and/or Marquis Johnson get playing time as well.

If Davis plays this year or not, I believe he is going to be awfully good before his football career at Alabama is over.
