Which UA logo is correct?

I am confused. I see the Alabama "A" logo everywhere, and even have one on my license plate, but I see at least 2 different versions of it. I don't know which is correct. I am thinking that the one on my Alabama license plate is actually incorrect. If so, well...I guess that figures. But, embarrassing. I am a graphic designer and it is my job to pay attention, especially to the logos I design for clients, and try to eliminate all misused versions of those I create.

See the difference in the "A"?

They are both "correct" but the one inside the circle is the "official" logo.

If one is "unofficial" (the one on the tag) then it is not correct and the state of Alabama did not secure the official logo from the University as they should have. And the avatar that I am using here is incorrect, as well, I see. Guess I better change it since I am so anal about these things. LOL

Just seems funny, yet not unusual, that the state would make such an oversight. And it even has a trademark on it!

At the time the state license plates were designed, the "A" logo that appears on them was indeed the official A.

Shortly thereafter, the logo changed to the circle logo. I've personally been impressed with how uniform the transistion has been (sans the state tags).

I think state tags are changed every 4 or 5 years, so a new one should be just around the corner.

I'm not complaining, but I have noticed that the "A" in the circle appears to be off center to the right. I first noticed it with the large logo attached to the outside of Coleman Auditorium. I think it appears offset because the top of the script "A" is leaning to the right. It just appears to look better when it is not inside a circle.

Am I alone?

No, you're not the only one to notice. I find it bothersome too, but use it as an opportunity to challenge my obsessiveness. ;)

You should've see me put the script A decal on my car window. Boy, wasn't that an exercise in "this doesn't look straight." Very frustrating. :)

Oh, thanks for the info. I didn't know that. Makes sense, now.

I sure do wish the official A was the one on the tag. It has a lot more presence than the official script A does.

are you people focusing on the circle vs non circle or are you focusing on the fact that in one the crossing of the A is swished up on the left and it is swished up on the right on the other one?

Just about as hard to get the script A magnets on the car doors on gameday.

the fact that in one the crossing of the A is swished up on the left and it is swished up on the right on the other one?

That one I believe.

That and the fact that the swoosh at the top of on "A" on the license plate is concave down while the swoosh at the top of the "A" in the circle is concave up.
