Who Are We?

Saban was due for a 9-3 or 8-4 season in the coming years. His staffs were becoming more and more recruiting services and less of coaching staffs. We were missing out on key players in recruiting especially on the defensive line. Last year was a gift in which we probably didn’t deserve but got because alot of things went perfectly right. I don’t know if we could realistically have expected a continuation in the new era because things were increasingly going against him.

I think I might not even watch us anymore the rest of the year. I have way more important stuff to do than drive myself crazy and raise my blood pressure while Tennessee and/or LSU absolutely evicerate our defense. Whatever this team is, it’s NOT Alabama. That, plus the overall state of the sport these days is laughable compared to what college football should be.

Nick saban had an acquired deeper understanding of coaching football that only comes with age and experience, CKD has a ways to go on that front imo, we've been fortunate to have a handful of those wise coaches.
 
Bama is literally a team in transition. I've always felt that we won't see the best of CKD until he has a roster full of his players.

Look at what happen once Saban had a full roster of his players. Not saying Kalen will enjoy that kind of run, I'm saying Kalen is working out the bugs of his system right now. By year 3 he should be starting a nice run of his own.

Success in college football has shifted from recruitment of high school seniors to finding older players with game experience who are not satisfied with their current situation. It is easier to raid other programs and get almost immediate results than waiting for recruits who have to adjust to being away from home for the first time and develop to the level of completion from within your team. Look at the schools that have invested heavily in the transfer portal: Ole Miss and Vanderbilt come to mind and see their improvement. Also we should not forget that bigger NIL payouts are an enticement to enter the portal in addition to other reasons. We lost a lot of talent and experience to the portal when CNS retired and we have not used the portal to our advantage. There needs to be some regulation on both the portal and NIL, but I am sure that is unlikely to happen.

College football is now NFL lite. And I don’t invest emotionally with any NFL team. I’ll watch only as a consumer, not a fan. So I guess I see my future path in regard to my Alabama fandom.


The uniqueness of the college is that you got to see young men come in as 17 year old kids and leave as 21 year old men, not just football players.Today, you can’t do that if they are only there for two years or less.

So what do I see through six games with this team? Someone said it earlier in this thread. Soft, undisciplined, lack of focus and awareness and questionable leadership. And I’m not just talking about players. This includes the coaching staff. I don’t question desire. I think there is a DESIRE to win. But the desire only gets you so far. The WORK is what gets you to the win. I firmly believe in what CNS would always say - “You do not practice so you get it RIGHT. You practice so you don’t get it WRONG”. We have far too many players on this team getting it “wrong” in key situations. And that, IMO, falls on the shoulders of this staff.

For this to be a team, it had to have one singular heartbeat as players and coaches. Right now it just has a very weak, almost undetectable pulse.

It’s worse than NFL lite. At least in the NFL you have contracts, a CBA, trade possibilities, etc. to motivate players/coaches to get it done. College football is the wild west right now. They’re going to kill the golden goose if they don’t fix it. Like others, I’m losing my interest and passion for it very quickly and if enough people stop watching….

But I think right now Alabama’s problems are much more localized.

I think we have an attitude and entitlement problem in the locker room. Pure speculation, but it seems that way. Seems to be a lack of discipline.

I think we have an enormous problem on defense. We are going to get run through a bunch this year.

We also have the problem of Milroe having bad days...playing hero ball...making horrible decisions.

We are consistent absolutely no where.

We’re a transition program. Right now we’re not a team as we’ve had in the Saban era. Dunno if that’s achievable anymore. These coaches and staff don’t appear to be a gelled unit. I don’t know if they will be. We all hoped there wouldn’t be a rebuild period, but here we are.

Army and Navy are undefeated as well. A playoff spot could be decided by the Army/Navy game.
