I have my flights reserved (me on award ticket, wife on Companion Pass) and am waiting to hear today from the University whether I am going to get my tickets. If not, I am going through a travel agent who has a package.Wanted to get some ideas from people that are planning on going to the game....making plans to go just wanted to get other people's opinions on things like hotels, rent a car? other things....please post!
Thanks for the advice. I've never been to California, but thanks to a good friend, i have free tickets. Roll Tide!Longtime Longhorn fan here...great site, by the way...and if you have never been to the Rose Bowl (or in this case, the events surrounding it) alol I can say is GO! I went to both of our recent trips out there and it is, without a doubt, the best run, the most fun and easiest trip to make of any bowl game.
It doesn't have to be terribly expensive. The first year (Michigan game) I went the "no expense spared" route. The NC game, I went the cheapie route. Obvously, had more fun on the cheapie trip.
If you can afford it, make sure that you go out early for the Parade. If you've never seen it in person you will not believe it. So much better in person than on tv.
For ticket info, go to the Rose Bowl site and they will guide you in making all your arrangements. One of the reasons I am so impressed with The Rose Bowl is that they make it so easy for you to order Parade tickets, parking, etc. and even if you don't do the actual Rose Bowl festivities, this site will give you lots of information about the game, parking, etc.
If possible, fly into Burbank. Much easier than trying to navigate LAX and the attendant car rental and traffic. Smaller airport w/ less problems. It is only a twenty minute drive to Pasadena, all by freeway that is not confusing, and I stayed in Burbank on both trips.
There are cheap hotels (albeit very clean and nice) in the Burbank town proper. Just look around and you can usually get a rate of under 100. a night. Beats the asking price of 400-500 a night for the hotelos that the teams are staying in. Most of the time those are also downtown LA which makes getting anywhere a hassle.
One bit of advice...remember that the game is going to be on a workday which means that the LA freeways are going to be crowded regardless, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get into Pasadena. For the NC game we got to the Rose Bowl early that morning after stopping at a grocery store and stocking up on easy tailgate items (items for deli type sandwiches rather than trying to do any actual cooking) and had the best time of our lives.
Go and enjoy yourselves. You're going to find the Texas fans are as welcoming as I have heard Bama fans are. You'll enjoy us. You'll also find that the Rose Bowl experience is so different from the other bowls that you are going to be sad that you won't have the chance to go every year.
Looking forward to a great game with no injuries to anyone.
