"Morning attire" is black pants, cutaway coat with gray weskit and top hat. At Homecoming, all the law students wore it and Shorty matched us. He would also occasionally wear it for other games. "Drunk as a Lord" comes from Britain and is literally centuries old. I haven't looked it up, but, as I remember, it was a slur the MOP Commons used to describe the behavior of the House of Lords...<chuckle> Now you've done it. Now you'll have to explain morning attire.
p.s. - I haven't heard 'drunk as a lord' in quite a while, either.
Oh wow! That's awesome! What was he doing.. or saying rather? I'm trying to get as much info about him as possible, things that family do not already know, or things they don't remember. If you look up in the stands behind KarmaQ's last photo, you'll see the law students in morning attire. I'm probably somewhere up there, since I remember that scene...

I remember my Mom and Dad chuckling about shorty, but I was to young to remember why. Later I began to understand, and saw the pics again, and the next thing I knew ""I was laughing too as a teenager".
I also remember a huge Bama fan that came back from Vietnam with a dis-figured face but was an awesome Bama fan, do you remember that gentlemans name? I think he ran for office at the time...
He wasn't making a speech. He was just leading cheers...Oh wow! That's awesome! What was he doing.. or saying rather? I'm trying to get as much info about him as possible, things that family do not already know, or things they don't remember.

Ralph "Shorty" Price was my grandfather....
From the Drunktionary comes this: "Drunk as a lord - Especially in the 1700s and 1800s, men prided themselves in the amount of liquor they could consume at one sitting; overindulgence was considered a sign of gentility (perhaps because one could afford so much drink)"

Oh yeah. The Charterwoods guy. I vaguely remember my mom saying grandpa knew him. He opened up the behavioral health center a few miles from here... but I think it has a different name now. I don't remember if they knew each other personally or if it was just through political ties. Here's a good picture of him with his model t. http://www.daretodreamnetwork.net/images/woods_model_t.jpgYou might be thinking of Charles Woods. He was burned in WWII, became a wealthy business man, and ran for governor. I remember seeing him in political commercials as a kid, and was very impressed with how successful he was despite such disfigurement. Here's more info Charles Woods - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Was he some sort of mascot?
I will definitely share all the info I get and as I remember things too. My granny is coming down with my aunt tomorrow and I'm going to hit her up for some stories. Just now, I remember one of the more popular family stories. It was from when he was drinking after the Alabama-Auburn game one year and he got into an argument with an Auburn fan. Grandpa pushed the Auburn fan to the limit and he picked grandpa up and slid him down the bar, breaking every glass on the way down. Grandpa got ....ed off and flipped him off as he was leaving the pub when the fan came up and shut the door, chopping off his middle finger. He stared at it for a little while, looked at my granny and said in a nonchalant manner, "Well... pick it up and lets go to the hospital."That rings true. I love similes, especially humourous ones, so unusual similes catch my eye and ear. I'm not sure if I ever remember anyone using "drunk as a Lord" in public speech, but I have seen it in print a few times.
Morning attire is all but gone now (Alas!), unless some retro movement resurrects it. The last public figures I remember seeing in morning attire were Reagan and the Japanese Prime Minister some time in the 80's. The tradition of law students wearing it to Homecoming games predates me, I think.
Did I mention that I love this thread? KarmaQ, thank you for the pictures. Please post more, and more often.![]()
