Not sure what you are trying to say. Every criticism of Hurts at that time was 100% legitimate, and it almost cost us the NC and did cost us a game. It’s great that he developed better after no longer being the starter (saved us in the following year’s SECC) and at Oklahoma and in the NFL. But at the time he wasn’t the best choice.
When Jalen won the job, people complained. they complained throughout season, offseason, spring, summer and fall. complained his last year at Alabama.

So when you said " at the time he wasn't the best choice..." I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

Many forget how much the role of a good OC affects the preparation and play of the qb. If Bob was still here I would be very concerned. I think that Milroe under Rees will be so much better. Likewise, I believe the defense this year will look like our very good defenses from past years. My attitude has changed. Forgive me, but I have been muching on rat poison for the last week.

I am saying that Jalen wasn’t the best choice in 2017, lots of people could see it, and the results bore that out. I’m not sure what you think the 2017 QB battle is supposed to tell us about the 2023 QB Battle, but I do know that the fact that the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string QBs on the 2017 roster are starters in the NFL now has zero bearing on who was the right QB at the time and who should start now. Also, I don’t know anyone who complained about him his last year at Bama, because he wasn’t the starter, and did great in the SECC game.

What am I trying to say? Only that I don’t see the point of your anecdote. All the guys in contention are basically unproven and the guy you are arguing for had serious ball control issues the last time we saw him receive meaningful snaps. Maybe he gives us a Sims story, maybe he doesn’t. He still has to actually earn the spot and earn the trust. I’m not sure why you are harping on people skeptical that he has turned it around based off interpreting CNS’s press conference tone of voice and 7 on 7 drills. The skepticism exists based on past performance.

I don't think you are wrong, but he's got to acquit himself of his poor play thus far. Everybody believes he needs to improve to be a championship-level quarterback.

The charges against him are mostly fair, especially the ones regarding ball security, inability to go thru progressions and his struggles to throw underneath routes and touch passes accurately (the thing that scares me the most).

I don't think anybody on this board is rooting against him, but if he is the starter these are the things we will be watching to see if he's improved.
I think it is fair to say that Saban will have a short leash if none of these game situation problems are not fixed from the past year. I know it's only MTSU, but they see the same things we all saw last year with Milroe and they will try and expose it.

I don’t really remember people complaining about Jalen until mid 2017 when it was becoming increasingly obvious that everyone was copying how Aranda schemed him, and the news about the receivers mutiny over him started becoming public.

ok, so Milroe starts , plays up and down most of the year but we are undefeated And make it to the national championship(not a beer) game. At halftime we are getting handled pretty easily. So out trots true frosh Dylan Lonergan who lights it up and brings us back to tie it. In the second overtime he takes two sacks and on 3rd and 37 he wins the game. Who starts next year? And what does Sayin do? How many hit the portal?

But we did speculate on Hartman when he hit the portal, but I think many thought Maye was coming.

It became super predictable. One read, drift right, run right, fail to throw it away and step out of bounds taking a 5yd loss. Rinse, repeat.
That was pretty much the scouting report, especially if you pressured him up the middle. Drift right, drift right, throw it away.
I loved Jalen at Alabama and he has grown into a very good QB, but watching that stage of his career was frustrating.

It’s gas Lighting man, you’re totally correct. Everyone was behind Hurts until it became apparent that he hadn’t progressed, and there was a quarterback behind him who had.

i kinda remember the Tua should get serious pt more after the 2017 LSU game. I maybe wrong but that’s my recollection.
That’s late 2017, teams with comparable talent were figuring him out, and insiders (on this board) we’re beginning to talk about the receivers being unhappy. Tua was being Tua, he had the throws against Vandy, the one to Ruggs versus Tennessee, etc. There was unease in the fan base for sure.

Back to Milroe: I simply want the incomplete pass to not be his fault more than it is. I don’t want replay after replay showing a receiver spinning in mid air trying to catch a pass behind him. I don’t want to see a wide open guy stare at a pass four yards away from him rocketing out of bounds. I don’t want to see replays of a guy wide open on third and six and we get a four yard scramble. If Milroe is still using his big arm to make all the throws, that is what will happen again. He’s still athleting, not playing quarterback.

What I don't understand is why we didn't play Jalen in 2018 against Clemson? It was obvious that Clemson was baiting Tua into throwing long and disguising their coverage on the long passes. Plus, Tua was playing with a surgically repaired ankle.

It would have been poetic for Jalen to lead the team to a NC over Clemson...

I will never root against a player. However, if I see 2 players on equal ground I will typically pull for the younger player. I see them as having a higher ceiling and more time to grow. This may be a situation where that approach doesn't work.

We always want the backup to get more significant playing time while running our actual offense. Last year we were able to see that with JM. I think there are a lot of people here that would agree that he did not wow them with the passing game. That is why I did not expect him to win the battle.

People point to Hurts as a reason that it can work out. I have felt that Hurts is the exception, not the rule. What I haven't accounted for is that JM could also be an exception. With that said, I am pulling for him to make a leap from last year.

If Jalen Milroe was about to start the season as the Quarterback at Auburn…

The Auburn fan base would be calling him the next Heisman Trophy winner…

Ans the Alabama fan base would be wringing their hands and worrying about how Bama is going to stop him…
Based on past known performance why would Bama be scared of Milroe. We would simply stack the box, including a spy, and force him to beat us deep........
