Schiano? Johnson? Grobe? Stoops?

I wish Coach Rod the best. As bad as it is for UA, it is nice to see that loyalty and roots still mean something to someone.

Hopefully we already had a back-up plan and will have an offer on the table to the next guy by COB today. I can dream, can't I?

I agree with the Kodiak, If schiano was going to leave he would have gone to miami, stoops is only a dream. There isnt much left out there but unproven coaches. Not much of a step in the right direction i must say...

is it possible to get anyone better than shula now?

No disrespect intended to CMS but yes, IMO. I think Johnson, Grobe, Bobby Wallace, and probably a few others that I'm not thinking of would be better. I like what I hear about Schiano, but I haven't seen Rutgers play and I don't know how the "culture shocK" thing would go with him, so I would hesitate a little on him. But it's been proven over the past 10 years that really bed head coaches can win 10 games at UA. So as long as we get an "adequate" coach that is hard working, demads discipline and respect, and hires good assistants (and doesn't crack under media/fan pressure), we'll be better. It seems bad right now, and I'm sure we'll get beat up in the media, but what else is new. Everything will be forgiven when we start winning.

I think Johnson is a shoe-in, now.

From a coaching perspective, CPJ is probably a fine hire. Recruiting wise...not so sure. PR-wise...I wouldn't come if I was him.

What about CJK as HC with someone like Jimbo Fisher as OC? Would this be that far a step below the overall package of hiring PJ?

Not a slam against xCMS, but any coach that instills discipline and isn't loyal to his coaches to a fault will be able to accomplish more than xCMS did. We're going to be fine.

I think if he kept a few of the current coaches on staff (Ball, Woods) we'd probably be OK with recruiting. If he can win at Navy, he obviously doesn't have to have outstanding talent. If we get a good coach recruiting will by-and-large take care of itself over time.

I like CJK, but he wouldn't be my vote for head coach. I'd love to keep him as DC, though.

Sadly, I am not even sure that Paul johnson is on Mal's list of coaches. I think he would be a better hire than RR but I guess the powers that be do not share my opinion. :mad2:

In three points or less, I'd love to hear someone sell me on Paul Johnson as the next HC at Alabama, given everything that the job entails...

Grobe nor Johnson, nor Schiano excites me at all. Stoops was my number 1 choice all along, but he is not coming. At best we are down to our 5th choice whoever we bring in. Yes all three of them did well this year but we all know they could easily win 6 or 7 games next year. I will support whoever we get 100% just like I did Shula. However, it will be a tough sell for me that we have started over again if the results are not better than we have been getting.

1. He has a proven track record - coached Georgia Southern to NC in DII. Turned a 1-10 Navy team into a bowl team for 2 years running - the first time an academy has done that since the 50s

2. Can recruit - I've said this before. You're a parent and CPJ comes into your house after Maryland does. Maryland gives a free education. Navy does as well. After graduating from Maryland, your kid gets a job. After gradution from the Naval Academy, your kid serves in the military for 5 years - and we're at war. Where do you want your talented son to go for a free education? For him to get ANY talent at all means he can convince parents that even with the war situation that coming to the USNA is the best thing for them. Even picking up a 2-star kid would be a HUGE win.

3. He can win with lesser talent - see above.

That's my three points.

1) Demands discipline, respect, and hard work from his players

2) Has won everywhere he's been (with different offensive philosophies, from what I gather... although offensive philosophy is unimportant to me)

3) Is from North Carolina - understands the pressure of southern football (maybe not Alabama football, but he's got to have a better understanding than someone from Rutgers).

i have said it before i'll say it again TEDFORD.:BigA:

Don't know much about him - I've sort of ignored posts on him b/c I was convinced Rod would say yes. I know Cal has won more lately than they have historically, but what do his teams play like. Disciplined? Run-oriented? Do they play defense?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but "Cold Pizza" reported that Navy, the United States Naval Academy, has just approved a new contract and raise for CPJ to $1.9 million plus incentives. So, I think you can pretty much check him off our list. Good coach though.

Does Johnson have any experience at all coaching at a BCS-level conference team (as a head coach or as an assistant)? I would think high-level experience would be a must.

Not that I know of. And I'm not necessarily endorsing Johnson. I'm just listing three reasons (as requested) why he could be a good hire. I think you'll find several on this board that will argue no BCS experience needed (Tressel, yada yada), but the lack of big-time experience is a concern of mine, as well.

Unfortunately, though, I think we are past the point of the beauty queen coach. You'll be able to find a wart or two on anyone on our list at this point, if you look close enough. The key is to, as Billy Beane puts it, find someone whose perceived "flaws" just don't really matter.
