Who's next?

Good grief... that b**bo on JOX just suggested Houston Nutt. Gimme a break.

I've never heard her say anything that's made sense. Where is she from...Auburn? Not a joke, I'm serious. :conf3:

For those clamoring for Paul Johnson, I do have a sincere question - does he know how to recruit? Does he have to/get to recruit at the academy?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but "Cold Pizza" reported that Navy, the United States Naval Academy, has just approved a new contract and raise for CPJ to $1.9 million plus incentives. So, I think you can pretty much check him off our list. Good coach though.

Is there a link for that where we can read about it?:conf2:

Has he signed it?

If not, we've got a shot (if indeed he is on our list). See today's announcement from WV for verification that unsigned contracts don't mean squat. The chance to play for all the marbles may be enough for him to walk away, if that's what makes him tick.

Don't know much about him - I've sort of ignored posts on him b/c I was convinced Rod would say yes. I know Cal has won more lately than they have historically, but what do his teams play like. Disciplined? Run-oriented? Do they play defense?

runs a balanced offense, put six or seven qb's in the pros. if he would keep kines the D would take care of itself. Cal stayed in top ten or fifteen until the end of the season.:BigA:

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

There are very few people that would make me lose interest in Alabama football. He is one of them.

Agreed. Spurrier and Jimmy Johnson would be two more... I've been a Bama fan forever (well over 30 years). I've had dreams and nitemares over this situation. But I would have to seriously think about putting my Bama stuff to the side if they hired anyone like those folks... (READ my signature...)

I guess I wouldn't be opposed to that, as long as he could handle the media/fan pressure. That's what I worry about the most for coaches from the left coast - culture shock.

What? Do you really think that? I think my border collie Maggie would be an improvement over what we had.

I'm gonna say this again... You may not have liked his coaching style or play calling or many other legitimate things. Everyone has an opinion. But he handled himself with class and loves the team/university and tried his dead-level best to get this program back in the right direction. I don't necessarily disagree with letting him go if he wasn't willing to make a few changes, but I am a Shula fan if for no other reason than he bleeds Crimson.

Without him as a player and a coach, we aren't as good a program. Period. No Van Tiffin Kick, No comeback against UGA, maybe no cotton bowl last year...etc.

Please show the man some respect. He IS one of 'us'.

I think we're on the same page. Listening to Johnson't interviews and PC's make me think he would be a good "fit" for Alabama. Haven't read as much about Grobe, but what I have read is positive.

Also, I watched part of the Wake/VT game. Even though Wake got trounced, I saw a play where an offensive lineman had a personal foul called on him. He immediately headed to the sideline to stand by the coach. That means something.

How about Norm Chow?

Chow says he talked with Tide before firing
Titans offensive coordinator says the two sides had discussions

NASHVILLE — You can scratch another name off the list of possible candidates to fill the vacant Alabama head football coaching job.

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow told The Daily he is not looking for another job and the vacancy in Tuscaloosa doesn’t excite him.

“I’m not interested in the Alabama job,” he said minutes after the Titans upset the Indianapolis Colts 20-17 on Sunday. “I am very happy right where I am now. I have a job to do here, and we’re getting better each week.”

While Chow did say the university has not contacted him since Mike Shula’s departure, he added both sides had discussions before the firing.

“I had some talk with the school before Shula left,” said Chow, who would not elaborate while on his way to a talk-show appearance.

In his second year with the Titans, Chow is best known as the offensive brain behind the University of Southern California’s two recent national championship runs and as a longtime coordinator at Brigham Young.

As the offensive coordinator at USC from 2001 to 2004, Chow directed the Trojans to top 20 rankings in total offense in his final three years at the school.

The 60-year-old Hawaii native shaped Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart into Heisman Trophy winners in his four years at USC. Before taking the USC position, Chow spent the 2000 season as the offensive coordinator at North Carolina State, where Athens High product Philip Rivers worked in his system as a freshman.

As a 27-year assistant at Brigham Young, Chow tutored Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer, Steve Young, Jim McMahon and Marc Wilson.

Pick a name out of a hat. There is at least a 99% chance that he will be significantly better than Shula will ever hope to be.

Does Johnson have any experience at all coaching at a BCS-level conference team (as a head coach or as an assistant)? I would think high-level experience would be a must.

Did Jim Tressel?

All he has done is win a national title and is poised to win another, and that after coming from a D-II school (Youngstown St.) and two butt-whoopins that CPJ's Georgia Southern team put on them.

HIRE PAUL JOHNSON!!!!!!

For the handful of Jim Tressels you can name a thousand who havent worked out. Taking a chance doesnt usually work, we would have to hope to get lucky

Do you think great coaches get great jobs the second they decide to become a coach. Most everyone starts at a Navy or Wake Forest or as an assistant at a small school. It's called progression. And for the record you could prop anyone up on the sideline and it is as good as Shula would have done.

Schiano, Grobe, Johnson, Tedford etc... are much better that what we had. The perception this is giving just sucks. It will come off as our fourth choice but people don't realize your first three choices would not be considered by most schools.

I had a feeling when Mal came in at 2 mill. a year that he would stay at West Virginia. All they'd have to offer is around 1.5 and fake promises for facilities and that would be enough reason to stay at an alma mater.

I don't think Mal should necessarily be fired but if he doesn't have a quick decisive plan now then it needs to be considered.

is it possible to get anyone better than shula now?

Is it possible not to?

CPJ would be a great hire. I really think RR would have been a mistake anyway. I think the media and fans would really bother him. That explosion last Friday on the West Virginia sports network was a clue to his disposition. Finebaum would have him and his wife for lunch. We'll be fine.
