Will B.J. Scott Redshirt ?

BJ is going nowhere. If he were to RS, it's simply because the staff doesn't want to waste a year of eligibility while he's learning the defensive playbook/reads.

My thoughts too, CA...I believe the staff sees a TON of potential there and would loathe to waste any more eligibility. They can afford to take it slowly, and do it right, if BJ keeps his focus and does his "due diligence."

BTW, our secondary next year and the year after may be really, really scary. Just silly the talent CNS is collecting and coaching there. :D

Arenas leaving next year may be the biggest hole to fill. He helps us win the field position game, is a very good DB, boosts morale.

I am really hoping that we are solid next year, without a major weakness to exploit, but with Greg's play, this may be the year instead of next to run the table.

We need some DB's to really step it up next year. We have the talent, it's just a matter of them learning Saban's pressure packed position, and developing their instincts.

If I was a DB, I would be studying his system every chance I had, especially this summer. The best athletes won't necessarily be the starters.

If I was a walk-on type DB with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder's, I would want to play for coach Saban. If you can learn his system better than the others and are aggressive as heck, you can really achieve some things. You'll play.

As much as I hate to say it , I have serious doubts as to whether or not he will ever play a meaningful down @ Alabama . JMO :(

My observation:

When recruiting an athlete, they rarely work out well as we hope.

I think its better to recruit a player that has played a solid position in High School. That way he may know MORE about the position he WILL play at the next level, and possibly in the league. As Athlete's tend to play every skill position on the field in high school, i.e DB, QB, RB, WR, hell even sometimes LB and K. So he pretty much relies single handedly on his Athletic abilities to succeed at the High School leve, where as in college, It takes alot more than just your athletic ability, it takes knowledge of the game, schemes, 'the little things', etc. Unless, of course, your Percy Harvin

So I agree with LCN, except I think A redshirt is a GREAT idea at this point, by his SR year he could help out tremendously.

It sucks though, maybe he's just not working like he needs too? Just a question, im just theorizing here. Anybody else have any explanations?

Where it stands now...

1) He was tried at WR last year. There was one very basic issue holding him back -- catching the ball. As a route-runner, he was a true freshman, and wasn't a full-time WR in high school so there will always be issues there. But he didn't have WR hands. I've had people try to argue with me before that he was great catching the ball in high school and to that, I say (a) this isn't high school and (b) I'm just telling you why he moved to defense to begin with. Anyone who sees the difference between HS defensive backs and the college level knows that catching the ball is a bigger deal at this level when the hits come faster and harder.

2) At spring, he did fine in one-on-one but struggled with the scheme. This was what got Lawrence behind, too, but Lawrence had the added issue of friction with the coaches. Hence, he's not here anymore. The fact of the matter is that this is the most complex defense in the conference (Monte Kiffin's included) and it has the unfortunate effect of processing out a lot of great HS athletes that can't make the mental transition once they get here. There's a reason Saban helps a very good assistant coach (Smart) coach the DBs personally.

3) Alabama's fifth cornerback is a guy named Chris Rogers. Rogers could start for all but three SEC teams this year (UA, LSU, UF). If he was at one of the other nine teams, he'd start, but at Alabama, he's the fifth corner. God bless Chris Rogers, because he's turned into a special teams demon and is an important part of the program but he has to wonder what would have been had be gone to FSU or Maryland, I'm sure. Having said that, when he's the fifth corner and Scott was the sixth, simple math tells you Scott isn't going to play much.

4) Going into next year, Alabama could very well be replacing four of its top five DBs (Arenas, Jackson, M.Johnson, Woodall, with Barron the only returning guy). If Jackson decides to go pro (and I believe he'll at least request an evaluation), Alabama will need three new corners. The plan right now is for Jackson to return, with probably Kirkpatrick the other starter and then you still have to have a third corner, because Robby Green probably starts at FS and Barron moves to SS full-time. In addition, the dime position will be open (Sharrief and King are seniors). I expect Scott to get meaningful snaps but it will probably come next year in the Marquis Johnson role rather than the Star role, which involves a bit of freestyling and instinct.

And, like someone noted, there will be a need for a new punt and kick returner.

Did anyone notice BJ Scott catching passes at receiver? I hope he makes the move back to the offensive side of the ball, Maybe as a dual threat in the wildcat.

I've noticed he's not sulking on the sidelines. After a big play I always see him jumping around trying to get the team excited. Says a lot about a guy to not get so down on himself while he's biding his time as a backup.
