News Article: Would Dabo answer if Mama (Alabama) calls?

I'm continually amazed at how folks seemingly ignore the thoughts and opinions of two of the most well connected folks to the Alabama program as we have here on this message board.

When TIDE-HSV and JessN give an opinion on something, you ought to pay attention. Dabo ain't getting that call. If he does get that call, then it will mean the University will have gone through some serious turmoil, far beyond simply having Coach Saban retire.

Consider: he's perfect for Clemson. We ain't Clemson.

I second this. TE is right, this has been discussed many times before here. Dabo was part of a staff that almost destroyed our program in 2000. He will not be coming to Tuscaloosa and thank goodness he won't.

You can keep saying that, but McElwain hasn't achieved anything at UF yet except a 8-1 record. He'd probably say the same thing. Let's see where they are at the end of the season.
He turned that dumpster known as Florida Gator football into a contender in ONE year. ONE. It took Saban longer than that at Bama.

McElwain would be a great hire, but comparing what he's done at Florida to what Dabo has done at Clemson is comparing apples to oranges. The cupboard was not bare at Florida, just hadn't had the right leadership. Mac took over a sleeping giant (at least based on the last 30 years). Dabo took over a perennial underachiever.

For the record, I am not advocating Dabo as the next coach at UA.
As mentioned above, with most players in their 3rd, 4th and 5th year under Dabo, his cupboard hasn't been bare either.

So are you saying we should hold that against him?

The question was asked what has happened to his defense since getting humiliated by WVU. I just pointed out his defense better look good this year since it consists of every starter being on campus for at least 3 years. Experience tends to mean good things.

Well..He won't win this years NC, but, could admire this years NC Trophy at The Bryant Museum if he comes by for a visit..I admire what he's done at Clemson, but, hope Kirby takes over as our HC when Coach Saban retires..I still think that's the best way to keep "The Process" in place & allow Kirby to build off what Coach Saban has built at Bama..That's just me though..

I don't think we'll go that route. I think McElwain would be the front runner, not Kirby. Coach Mac has punched his ticket now at two programs, one being a very successful turn around in a short period of time. Plus, he's coached at Bama under Coach Saban so he knows what he's getting into. I think Coach Smart would be retained if he wanted to stay, but I think after DuBose, we'll never see a coordinator elevated to HC status again, especially if they don't have head coaching experience.

While I am a huge fan of Coach McIlwian; he has a great future at Florida and IMO would not take the Alabama job since it could be considered a lateral move. The SEC East for the time being is a much weaker division and that always helps with the Ws and Ls.

At this point in the discussion I think McElwain would be the best fit. He is familiar with the program, is a student of Saban, and has already proven himself as a head coach at two different schools now...one of which is in the SEC. I think he would bring the hard nosed style of football that Alabama is known for. Now my opinion could change in a few years but if Saban announced his retirement after this season then McElwain would get my vote.

I believe we = SEC champions in 1999, and for anyone to blame duboses debacles on dabo would be completely un merited... On what grounds do you put any of that on his shoulders?

Two years ago no one was willing to consider Dabo or Mac - we have no idea who the premier names will be when CNS retires, which might be some time from now.

I get that people like to talk about football, but I'll never understand these sorts of threads. We may as well be wondering how many championships CNS will win before he retires - no on has a clue, it's pure speculation.

I'm not advocating CDS to be the next HC after CNS. I never said that. I just think he is a good coach and I don't understand all of the hate thrown at him. Good lord, he's a Bama alum and former player...he's not Phil Fulmer for God's sake. Bash him all you want, but he is doing a good job at an also ran school, that was a whipping boy of the ACC until he showed up.

I don't think people hate him, but if you have had your integrity called into question--as practically everyone on that 2000 staff has had-- then that can be an incredibly difficult hurdle to overcome with many people.

No one would want Dabo to be head coach if he wasn't a former player. People on here like to laugh at coaches for being too rah-rah and emotional on the sideline (ala Gus), so why would they all of a sudden be fine with Dabo doing that? Just because he played at Alabama?

If you think only MD was culpable in what happened in 2000, then you are very uninformed. I suggest you PM Mr Earle and maybe he can help you understand the position most of us take on this.

ok ok he might of had something to do with the 3 and 8 record lol, but still that should fall on the head coaches shoulders primarily right? As it was not his ship to sink

I guess people see what they want to. That dumpster fire won 11 games a few seasons ago with Muschamp at the wheel. BTW at this point they have 0 wins against a team still in the top 25. They are winning on a weak schedule and good defense (which nobody ever accused them of not having the last few seasons.)

Didn't Clemson have 70 points scored on them a few years back in a bowl game? No way I'd want a coach whose team gave up that many points.

I'll play this game but I need a number. How many points given up is too many for you to want the coach?

If he'd only given up 62, is that good enough? 55? 51?

Give me a number of what is too many and let's test your thesis.

I'm not arguing for DS but this is a terrible starting spot for advocacy.

I believe Kevin Steele was his DC when West Virginia ran them out of the Orange Bowl.

Dabo is a nice guy, has a great family and is a great fit for Clemson. He isn't Alabama's next head coach, and I'd bet my house on it.

Agreed. UF will likely lock him down with an even better contract that he has now and he will stay put.

It wasn't the losses as much as what was going on behind the scenes.
He has taken full advantage of a great situation in Clemson that has worked out terrifically well for both parties.
