VT Offensive Issues

Concerning "those cupcake teams fans like to complain about" --

Three or four years ago Scott Hunter said on Mobile radio, "The ACC stands for "All Cup Cakes."

From reading their boards, all those woes are in the past and they will be offensive dynamos this season. At the same time, they keep saying that TT will punish us with his legs.

I have noticed that as well. Some of the VT receivers who were so poorus last season are now all world players according to Tech fans.

If I were a Bama fan, I would just be worried about the big plays. We don't have many, so it's not a big worry, but I have a hard time imagining us getting any more than a couple sustained drives, especially now that Evans is gone. Usually those drives end up with a FG, since it seemed like our TD ratio in the endzone was not that good last season (just perception, I've not done any research).

We've also started the last couple of seasons very poorly on offense, and I also think that works in Bama's favor. The last 2 seasons our offense looked dreadful at the beginning, but decent at the end. For example; VT only had 3 points after the first half against Furman. Yes - D1-AA FURMAN.

As a Hokie, I'm hoping to see improvement out the gate from our offense, but not expecting it either.

As I've said before, this game comes down to a couple critical plays imo. Should be a nice defensive battle, but pretty sloppy offensively. We shall see, if I were betting, I'd put money on Bama atm.

I for one believe VT's defense is for real. Nomad Hokie's point about avoiding big plays by VT is well-taken. Likewise for avoiding mistakes.

A line in the Bleacher Report referred to how Alabama likes to bring pressure on the QB. Accurate, I suppose, since it says we like to bring pressure. I don't recall our being very successful at it last year, though.

thats the way i see it. my biggest worries are giving up a blocked punt, a big return on a punt/kickoff, or a pick 6. if we can avoid [too many of] those things i think we will see enough offensive production to win.

Your TD ratio in the ENDZONE was not that good???

That's really bad. I didn't even know that was possible. Must have been A LOT of penalties on touchdown plays, eh? ;)

I recently watched the Bama/UGA game on my DVR and boy did we bring pressure on Stafford the entire first half. He had little to not time to throw the ball and the pocket was virtually nonexistent for him. So, these guys know how to bring pressure, they just have to be more consistent.

On another subject regarding VT. I heard a small portion of Frank Beamer's interview on the Jim Rome show today. Anyone catch the whole thing and did he give his thoughts on the VT/Bama game?

you obviously didnt know that virginia tech has the most experienced offensive line of any BCS school. we have 100 starts on the oline. yall have less than 50. even thought Darren Evans is lost for the season, he closes one door and opens 5. ryan williams and david wilson are going to punch yall in the mouth. NOW i will say that yalls defense is next to amazing... but tyrod taylor traditionally plays best against GOOD defenses. he was the MVP of the ACC champ game against a VERY good BC defensive who was better than yalls for this this year. they had Raji, Brace, Herzlich and others who matches up to yalls. we also have 295 pould TE/QB Greg Boone who is SO underrated and we will use him against yall at QB. also our special teams is going to play a huge factor.

Dude, put down the crack pipe and step away. A few questions though.

Is this the same Oline that gave up 30+ sacks last year?

Is this the same TT that threw 7 interceptions and only 2 TD's last year?

Can these two runningbacks run over Mt. Cody, Hightower, McClain?

The more I look at the matchups the more confident I become. TT is most dangerous when he scrambles but he's careless how he carries the ball. I expect our defense to spy him.

I'll be very surprised if this game is closer than a TD.

Bama rolls easily 34-13

On your RBs punching us in the mouth, if they do they will be penalized probably in more ways than one. On BC's defense being better than ours this year. I wonder how you could know that. Our D hasn't played a down this year.

Our discussions with other VT posters here have been civil and fun. Unless you can change your approach somewhat, discussions with you might prove pointless. :frown:

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but are you saying that BC's defense last year was better than ours???

Care to back that up with anything?

So.... a defense that wasn't as good as ours last year was better than our will be this year, despite the fact that we're returning most major contributors?

Cool story bro.
