Mississippi St. fan at work

I didn't agree with you until I looked at State's schedule. I can see them only winning two. If they only win two, Mullens will find it hard to recruit the state (which should actually be easy with his offense, considering pretty much every high school runs a variation of the spread).
Here is State's 2009 schedule:
I guess they beat Jackson State and Middle Tennessee and possibly Houston.

Houston will be a loss also. It doesnt say much but they are the class of the CUSA.

he's right. what would entice a recruit to choose that town and that campus over any other program?

I heard an interview last night with Mullen and he said that State had verbals from 8 of the top 20 in-state players even during the period between Sly and himself. :conf3: Doesn't make sense, but recruiting is not exactly Nutt's forte, so he may be able to do pretty well in Mississippi.

I have to admit that he was pretty impressive in the interview, he might do well enough there in the short term to use it as a stepping stone to a more viable program. He could do that just by making them somewhat competitive.

My goodness you guys, MSuuuu has that new $6,000,000 tv...why are you so hard on them? at least the punter won't kick into it (RE: Jerry Jones new 1.2 B stadium with the low TV):p:p

If you're referring to the new Cowboys stadium, I have a feeling that will be considered a major blunder.

I look forward to seeing a punter of an opposing team kick it into the screen. Then on the rekick, there is an offsides which lets them maintain possession.

I work in Mississippi, so I have a lot of state fans here. I got into a conversation with several of them today about the upcoming season. One very bold fan said that Florida would lose 1 regular season game this year (I actually agree with that). Then he said one of the craziest things I believe I have ever heard. He said it would be to Miss. St., because they never play them good in Starkville and because they have the man that made florida football what it is:biggrin:. He said Florida would not be as good this year with out Mullens. Are you ready, because here comes the crazy part:wink:. All of the other state fans (12 of them) agreed with him.:conf3:

There were only Three Wise Men
There was the Magnificent Seven
There was Twelve Disciples
There was the Dirty Dozen

and now we have:

the CLUELESS Thirteen.

with all the talent in that state, even a halfway decent coach could be successful IF he could lock up the top players year in and year out. although he's not a great recruiter, i think nutt's a good enough coach that on-field success might put ole miss in a position to entice the best state talent to the rebs. in complete contrast to starkville and msu, oxford and ole miss would seemingly be great places to play college football.

that being said, it'd be fine with me if they both stunk it up so that coach saban can make further inroads recruiting miss.

I wouldn't exactly call it "making further inroads", as Alabama (and several other SEC programs) has a long history of taking the top prospects in Mississippi. Not only do both programs in Mississippi have to deal with a spotty past, at best, they have to fight tooth and nail for their best prospects, and then hope they qualify. There's a lot stacked against Ole Miss and Mississippi State, especially MSU.

Awwww, let the MSU fan have his little fantasy - can you imagine how hard it is to be an MSU fan?

Must be pretty hard! My oldest son graduated from MSU and he watches and comments on the games but deep down he is STILL a BAMA fan!
He never leaves my side on game days and cheers just as loud as I do for the TIDE!

ROLL TIDE!

The part that bothers me the most about this whole encounter is that this guy is not the first State fan to say "Dan Mullens made Florida what it is". Don't get me wrong I think he will be a good coach and he is great with the offense, but Meyer and Tebow has made Florida what it is today. Personally I think CDM made a huge mistake taking the State job, because it is as dead end as it comes. Nothing good ever happens for the head coach at Mississippi State.

Uhhhhh what He said!!!!! MSU has always been a dead end for coaches. Name any that prospered in the past 35 years post MSU.

Sherril, Felker, Tyler, Croom, etc. It's a dead end, if DM is able to scrap together any success at all, he'd be best served to get the heck out of dodge!

Also someone mentioned states facilities. They're not that bad, sure the stadium is a bit of a small dump, but hey the field always looks great ;) I've heard of multiple occasions where kids from MS have gone and visited Michigan or other non-southern schools and said MSU's facilities were WAY WAY better! (of course this is one thing Rich Rod. is trying to correct) No their facilities aren't on par with Bama, Tenn, LSU, etc. but they are nice... just sayin!

Roll Tide,
Phillip

Yeah, that's just rough for a team that seems to be starting from scratch.

IF and I mean IF they did upset Florida that would be huge, earth shattering news - UF would not live it down and that one loss (if that's all they had) would be enough to keep them out of title talk if there was other legit one loss teams.

But that ain't gonna happen. UF spanks 'em - just like they did so many other teams last year. The one team I see with a good chance against them is... us! In the SECCG, of course. Hehe, crimson glasses firmly in place.

I actually think that, of the three SEC schools that made coaching changes in the offseason, MSU ended up with the biggest upgrade. I realize he's still a bit of an unproven commodity, but a coach like Dan Mullen is exactly what that program needed. A young, energetic, offensive-minded coach - basically the polar opposite of Sly Croom.

I know Croom is a Bama grad, and I realize he did piece together an 8 win season in 2007, but I was never terribly impressed with him. His blind, unwavering support and promotion of an offensive system that was clearly never going to work with the quality of personnel he had cost them more than a few games. His only saving grace was having Ellis Johnson on staff.

Mullen might fall flat on his face, but I think he's a step in the right direction. I think MSU will be better this season than anyone expects. And if that staff manages to recruit even just a little bit, we could see a return of MSU's glory days in the late 90s when they were good for 7 or 8 wins every season.

Schools like Mississippi state are never going to be able to keep up with the skill player arms race of the SEC. their best option is to go the route they took under Jackie and find big strong guys, feed them beef, push iron for years and just try to pound folks to get wins. If they try to match skill guys with us and Florida they are just going to lose.

I think that's a good outlook on the situation, but I think the spread could make them competitive if they stick with it. Smaller programs have built winners using a wide open offense, so its possible. However, they are, like you said, never going to be consistent in their approach, whatever it may be. Needless to say, Mississippi State has a long road ahead of them.

Everybody has a right to dream, right. I mean, who in their right mind would have thought Louisiana Monroe would beat Alabama ... or Notre Dame would beat Hawaii ;);)??

That said ... LET'S GET THIS SEASON UNDERWAY ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
