In the middle of Hog Country
It's always interesting to listen to the opposing fans view on Monday. In general, most hog fans just tip their hats to Bama. Some think Mallet panicked but most realized Bama had a good game plan. They really want Willy Robinson (D-Cord) fired.

One other thing that got discussed a lot today was D Hightowers injury. Believe it or not, most fans found it to be a cheap shot and wanted to know why CBP hasn't done anything about it. One of the reporters close to the program said that CBP agreed that it was a bad block and punished his players with extra running after Sunday's practice. I don't believe it. It really sounds like it's just coach talk. I get a strange feeling that CNS has either said something about it or CBP expects something to be said.

To me, a big lineman like that doesn't need to be blocking like that. The coaches are teaching them to do it, I seen it a few weeks ago in the Arkansas vs Georgia game also. All that type of tackle is for, in my opinion, is to injure the player it's being done to. The stats don't lie either, highly doubt CGP punished him for doing it.

However, if he did, more power to him, I just don't believe it.

I don't think the players got punished either. Heck, CBP has been teaching this for years. I will say most Hog fans don't like it either. I gotta believe that CNS or some other SEC coach is going to take task with this kind of coaching. I wished I knew what CNS really thinks about it.

Arkansas = Auburn = Dirty football
Each has A History of 'Dirty tactics' designed to injure their opponent.
(It happens too many times to these two team to be anything other than
something that's been taught.) One day the NCAA will outlaw spearing the helmet into knees, just as they did to the head. Meanwhile a bunch of players will grace the tables of Dr. Andrews.

I've already posted in another thread what Javvy thinks about it. He basically said that ARK did it because they knew they couldn't man-up and take us on physically...

That's all talk for the Fans IMO. Cut blocking has been taught and misused for years and years. I don't think this particular player was trying to hurt Dont'a. He's a big lumbering lineman who was blocking the way he was taught. He dove at his legs a to knock him off his feet and caught him bad. These huge linemen aren't the most nimble people in the world and this guy, running full out to begin with, isn't going to target a specific body part (KNEE) to key on. He was just trying to cut him off his feet and make a play to help his team. NOT DIRTY on his part, just doing his assignment. It's nowhere near like they're the only ones doing it, it's done nationwide. IF IT WORKS, TEAMS WILL DO IT AS LONG AS IT'S LEGAL.

The anger is misdirected here IMO. If you don't want to see this kind of stuff keep happening, make your voice heard by the NCAA. They're the only ones who can change the rule, and it should be changed. Make cut blocking completely illegal and make chop blocking an ejection level penalty. If you want to end this kind of injury, direct your anger at the ones who control the rules, they're the one's who are at fault here.

While the block was questionable I don't think it falls into the same category as the chop block by the barner against Glen Dorsey a few years ago. Here's Rolando's take on it:

McClain didn’t take issue with the block, but doesn’t like the fact that it is allowed.

“It’s legal. You can’t say that it was a dirty play on the guy,” McClain said. “But for me just being a linebacker, I would rather the guy just come and try to block me man to man. I hate that guys cut, but it is a part of the game. It’s something that we practice. “

The unfortunate thing is I believe other teams may attempt to do this as well. No team on our regular season schedule can match up physically with us. I hope we have no more incidents, but I fully expect teams to do these type of things in the future.

I hate that we lost Hightower, but to call the block classless is a bit of a strech. We use the cut block technique. Hanks cut an Arkansas db when he was blocking on one of the screens to Upchurch. It was the play before his long reception. Is Hanks classless?

There needs to be a distinction made here in technique. I know what play your talking about and Hanks used his body which is good technique. There is a difference in going helmet first and body first.

Exactly. WE talked about this in another thread but I was to angry to articulate what you have pointed out.

Cut blocking is legal, and will always be a part of the game. As a high school TE, I cut guys all the time. If they were just plain bigger and stronger, and chose to bull rush (on passing plays); or scraping backers try to run straight thru you, you cut the knees. I am unaware of a cutting techniue that allows you to lead with your body.

If I remember correctly, the old AHSAA rules on cutting were that inside the tackle box, and within 3 yards of the LOS, you could go straight for the knees without trying to engage above the waist first. If outside of this area, you were still allowed to block below the waist, but had to first engage the defender above the waist, and work your way down to his knees.

We have some NCAA refs who are residents on this board. Perhaps they can educate on what they look for on illegal blocks below the waist.

Cut blocking is legal, and IMHO the block by the Ark player was not intentionally designed to hurt Hightower. He simply caught him in the wrong spot at the wrong time - before Dont'a could get his foot off the ground. If you disagree, fine; we are all entitled to our opinion, so no need to reply to this post to tell me how wrong and stupid I am. I have my wife for that. :biggrin2:

Also, would there be a difference in Maze's block if his body had caught the Arky player's knee(s) in the same way Dont'a got caught? Because it likely would have resulted in the same or worse injury.

If you want to see a real cheap shot, look at the Aub block in the YouTube video above. Done by a true professional, and had absolutely nothing to do with the play.

Agree 100%. I am tired of hearing about it.
