Link: Tiger Woods is in Hattiesburg for "treatment"

Isn't everyone a sex addict. I mean I think I just lack the oppurtunity. That like someone who could have full blown coke addiction if they had the means to indulge it, but instead, just have a problem
 
This whole "sex addiction" thing is ridiculous. It's far more about narcissism and its accompanying entitlement than about anything related to addiction. Saying someone is a sex addict is an insult to the people who have serious, real addictions to alcohol and drugs. Don't get me wrong - those addictions have their beginnings in personality failings too, but they end up with very real neurochemical addictions. Saying someone is addicted to sex trivializes real addictions.

Tiger's behavior reeks of entitlement and getting his jollies by secretiveness. Getting past that type of compulsive behavior requires self-discipline, respect for yourself and others, and getting emotional fulfillment from within rather than from others. The question is whether or not Tiger has what it takes to get over himself.

It is actually viewed in the same light as a drug problem. People use sex as an outlet because it makes them feel good. Just like a drug, they use it for self destruction purposes, and something to cover up pain and or emotional problems. No different from your local drunk or crackhead. There are sex addicts who are so addicted to sex that they have sex 30 times a day and whore themselves out. And not talking about going to a bar, I am talking about walking the streets.

However like most addictions, there is an underlying issue. And I believe that is what Tiger is in treatment for.

Pleading ignorance here, but doesn't the act of sex set off neurochemicals in the brain, and isn't it plausible that someone of his means, who has ready access to sex with many, many attractive women....could develop an addiction?

Isn't this similar to the gambling addiction where one gets addicted to the thrill?

Honest question - sex addiction is not valid? I have read many times that sex produces the same hormones that produce many legitimate drug addictions. Is that incorrect? Is it really a hoax?
 
Yes, sex and other thrilling activities cause a release of excitatory neurotransmitters. Yes, there are those in my field of medicine who are making a pretty penny hyping the treatment of "sex addiction" and it's all the latest rage. Show me someone who goes through physiological withdrawal from lack of sex or gambling and I'll worship at the alter of those things being true addictions. There is a world of difference between psychological and physiological addiction. Substances usually start as psychological addictions then become physiological addictions. Sex and gambling do not. Psychological "addictions" are rooted in character deficits I already mentioned in a previous post. Sorry for not having been more clear. There are lots of folks out there who label personality disorders as mental illness. I am not one of those.

I do not consider it an illness. It's a weakness. The guy needs a piece of paper from somebody that will stand up in court. If he had married a good ole southern girl,,, when she caught him, she would have fixed him on the spot.
 
I wonder why he is worried about it now. If his wife is leaving him then why wouldn't he want to keep all of the womanizing stuff going for his new single life.:conf2:
 
I know that some drugs are really addicting (like heroin), but alcoholism and tobacco use seem to me to be more like this "sex" addiction. I say this as a person who smoked for 8 years (3 packs/day for most of that time) and walked away without the slightest physical withdrawal. I also drank very, very heavily (sometimes more that a fifth per night) for years and walked away from that with no physical withdrawal.

When I fell in love with my wife, I found a reason to want to live a long life, so I ended some of my stupider habits. I stopped smoking "cold turkey" and reduced my drinking to social drinking (without getting drunk) without feeling the need to drink the way that I used to. For me, it did not even require an effort - just the resolution of mind. I enjoy a few cigars every year without any desire to return to cigarettes. I drink with my friends without getting stupid (never achieve more than the slightest buzz). In other words, I don't have to fear the behaviors because I am in control, not my whims.

I wonder, given my experience, if the people who simply "can't" break these habits really want to...

Wow! On just ONE day, if I smoked three packs of cigarettes and drank a fifth of whiskey, I don't think I would survive it. And you did this for years?

You need to have your liver enzymes checked.
