Au fans don't care since they got Cam Newton. I like our chances against a first time qb coming into our stadium.
I don't think he's that smart so it might take a while. I mean, he was dumb enough to steal a laptop but not smart enough to wipe off the operating system.
From what I understand Newton is a good athlete, can scramble, etc. Does anyone know how accurate of a passer he is? I've seen a lot of good QBs who are excellent athletes with very live arms, but have trouble in the down field passing game because they are unable to hit open receivers.
I'd personally rather have a primarily pocket-passer who can read a defense and be accurate in hitting recievers in stride (McElroy, Danny Wuerfel (sp?), etc) than have a guy who can make plays with his legs but can't hit open receivers consistently.

I remember as we all do how much Rollison was going to be their savior and he was perfect fit for Malzaln's offense!!

Bama fans have been screaming from the rooftops that Newton's gonna suck and is the second coming of Brent Schaeffer, but I don't see how they are so sure of it.
He's got great physical tools -- he may not need to be that great of a passer to excel in Malzahn's offense. (Who knows -- maybe he *will* be a good passer?)
And, again, the guy was a 5-star coming out of high school and went to Florida. I have a very hard time believing he's a total stiff.

"Laptop" Newton would not be the first 5-star to tank. Recruiting is an inexact science anyway. To me particularly at the QB position, you cannot go by how the recruiting services rate QB's. We've had our share of flops at the QB position with guys that were supposed to be all-everything, Billy Ray, Jeff Dunn, Vince Sutton.
All I heard from the Aubies in 2007 is they had their QB of the future in Kodi Burns. I remember hearing them say that Burns was a superior athlete, had a rocket for an arm and had great touch. Granted Burns was a 4-star QB. Maybe with Newton having an extra star he will turn out to better for them than Burns. :biggrin: I think Burns would have turned out to be a very good WR had he been put at WR when he arrived at Auburn.
I will go on record as saying I think Newton ends up being nothing special.

It seemed pretty clear to me that Auburn had to apply for some sort of learning disability exemption just to get this kid into school in the first place -- no other way the Clearinghouse would have signed off on such a massive jump in his ACT score -- and without trying to be mean, no kid with that kind of a learning issue was ever going to be able to competently run an offense with as many moving parts as what Malzahn has against SEC defenses. It's nothing personal against the kid, just reality.
Truth be told, I think it was probably (to a degree anyway) the same issue that we had with Alonzo Lawrence. People like to say that football isn't rocket science and that you don't have to be a genius to play the game, and while that is fundamentally true, the truth remains that football is a hell of a lot more complicated that most anyone imagines, and you have to be a pretty bright kid to process everything and act upon it properly in a split-second.
And as for Newton, I imagine he'll do pretty dang well as long as his offensive line can stay healthy. An offense with as many moving parts as Malzahn's will always give teams trouble with mental breakdowns, and my thought is that if Chris Todd could get the job done (who had average at best arm strength, accuracy, mobility, and decision-making skills), Newton likely will too. Physically, Newton is a definite upgrade in every single physical area over Todd, and it's not like Todd was a mental magician working out there. If the line stays healthy, I imagine Newton will do well.
