The projection of Auburn success this season seems to be based entirely on the fact that they ALMOST beat us. It amazes me that people ignore the fact that they fell apart during the second half of the season last year.
Exactly...
Quoting from an ESPN.com gallery on the Top 20 games of the upcoming season regarding the Iron Bowl:

"The Tigers were very close to beating Alabama last season. They could finish the job in 2010 -- and help decide the SEC West race."

Unfortunately, for Auburn, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, not football.

Not to mention this is a different job all together this year. It's a new season with new players and new situations (and a gimmick based offense which folks have had a year to figure out).

I agree with several posts above that KH's comments are ratings driven. I have heard numerous barn fans complaining that ESPN has become the Bama Football Network with the spring game, All-Access, etc. He is simply throwing a bone to jilted SEC fans.

I'm a fan of Herbstreit if there is one person on the College Gameday show I actually listen to it is Herbstreit. Not Corsoe, not Rocket and surely not Chris Fowler. Kirk has been quite supportive of Alabama over the years even when we were down he had some nice things to say. He is in my opinion more knowledgeable than Gary Danielson. Everyone should be allowed one bonehead pick every year, possibly this one is Kirks. ;)

I think Herby is just poking for the ratings. He's an OSU homer for sure, but he's a pretty level headed guy most of time.
There have been others to pick the boogs to challenge or win the west.

Awbarn this year is the Ole Miss of last year. The media seems to be thinking that since Ole Miss upset Florida in 08 and in 09 they were returning a potent offense, they were the pick to win the west--So, Allburn allmost beat BAMA and then "won" a bowl game. They then addded a top rated quarterback that will put them over the top to win the west.

I think Tate will be missed. I also think that the media and the boogs will realize that Todd was a better QB than they thought.
The defense should be better, but it will still be middle of the pack.

I think anytime a reporter says anything about us, we get all "I hated that guy anyway."

I personally don't care what KH thinks. It would be illogical to think that everyone in the country is going to pick us. And I'm glad there are some dissenters; otherwise, what would be the fun of being #1?

I am with you Rich for the same reason you stated, But to say Auburn wins the West is a huge stretch. but you are right, everyone can be a bonehead at times. I think he is 'feeling ' it from management to be more outlandish and controversial!!

Yeah because everyone in the entire nation is just waiting to see
booger high school on tv.

You cant blame espn since they know what a winner is.
The networks want a national brand with an elite following not some podunk
town that is lucky if they draw 100 people to a toilet paper roll on a corner
or a group who dresses in halloween costumes every weekend.
For the lurking sec rivals Ill break it down for you.
Winner in layman's terms is spelled Alabama.

1. Herbie has his conferences confused. Auburn would win the Big 12 because you don't need a D. out there.

2. I like Herbie. I like Corso. I like Mark May. I do not always agree with them.

3. I do not like Granny and I never agree with him. Well, maybe one time.

You don't think Herbstreit's pick of Auburn over Alabama has anything to do with the fact that Herbstreit is an Ohio State guy, do you?

Herbstreit's picking Auburn to win the West this year is like a Nazi officer saying that Italy is going to beat the United States in World War II.

I keep asking myself why I don't put Herbstreit up there with Bob Griese as a commentator on college football. They both have that high-pitched whiney delivery, and both played quarterback, but the difference is that Griese won the Super Bowl and quarterbacked the only undefeated team in pro football history, and Herbstreit was lucky to be first-string at Ohio State his senior year.

If you were to give a dictionary definition of "ESPN-style talking head," you couldn't illustrate it better than with Herbstreit's picture. I would lay you odds that Herbstreit was the guy in class who invariably put his hand up in class and said, "I know! I know!"

The difference between Bob Griese and Kirb Herbstreit is that I have always wanted to hear Griese's opinion -- much like I wanted to hear Kenny Stabler's opinion. Herbstreit has never struck me like that. To me, he's just another ESPN loudmouth who is always out of breath, trying to get Lee Corso to listen to him. I agree with Corso, apparently, as to Herbstreit's football acuity.

Herby, just sit down and watch what happens when an Alabama team is loaded. Neither you nor any other Northern-Press type guy is going to be be able to help your beloved Buckeyes this year, other than to spout off such inane stuff as "Auburn will win the SEC West this year."

Herby, I "knew" Bob Griese, and you're no Bob Griese.
Do I think Herbstreit's pick goes back to his Buckeye roots? No I don't.
Kirk got on our bandwagon earlier than just about anyone when CNS arrived.

His pick might have more to do with us as Auburn -- our schedule, our special teams, and the simple fact that history tells us our level of success is almost impossible to maintain. (This will be Nick Saban's hardest coaching year ever.)

So KH likes Auburn. Jess doesn't. Some people think we'll repeat; some think we'll lose three or four games. It's football. Let's put the conspiracy theories aside and find out who's right.

Kirk is a smart guy, very fair and usually deferential to the Tide. This time he went with a trendy pick, but let's just hope he didn't put good money on it.
I like Herbie, too, he's usually fairly unbiased. I think he's just going against the flow this time. I feel sure he wouldn't put money where his mouth is with this pick.

It seemed for a while that Arkansas was the trendy pick, but more and more media types seem to be coming around to Auburn. Then, there are some who are going against the grain by picking Georgia or South Carolina in the East. The fact is that Alabama and Florida are still the big dogs, but Bama and UF both have more question marks going into the year this year. It will also be impossible for both Bama and UF to reach the SEC title game undefeated because we play UF during the regular season. This could be one of those years where some team jumps up and surprises folks. It wouldn't really surpise me if the teams in the SEC championship game had a couple of losses this year. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if Bama and UF were in the championship game with only the one loss between them. Like someone else mentioned, everyone is entittled to an opinion. Fortunately, it is almost time to find out on the field. RRROOOOOLLLLLLL TIDE!

I still like Herby. Somebody always has to make an "out on a limb pick". One year Holtz picks Notre Dame to win it all. One year Corso picks Cal to play in championship. It must be for pure entertainment...he can't actually believe it. I think Jess' prediction is closer to the truth.

I do like Herbie better than all of those other Gameday pinheads. He is entitled to his opinion, but we shall see how the season unfolds each week.

I saw one preseason SportCenter show where they were actually joking about how they decided which guy would take which team. They laughed about how they had to divide up by a coin flip. I believe that's what Herbie's doing - keeping it interesting...

Or Herbie is getting soft in his head. Auburn is strictly playing spoiler come the day after Thanksgiving. On the road, against a Saban team with a season under it's belt. The only motivation they will have is spoiler, and I still think they have a high school offensive coordinator (and not the old-school, run the ball 9 times for every throw guy that won 9 games for every one he lost).

I saw him when he picked them and he was laughing at his own joke.

I think this also speaks to how both sides always have arguments, in anything, if you maintain an open mind and think about things fairly--in college football and in life.

That would be my guess too.

I could make a legitimate case for Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss or Auburn as the primary challenger to us in the SEC West. If you look at it from Herbstreit's perspective, Moo U. is just the most interesting pick.

Cold hard reality says Auburn abandoned their hope of competing for the West when they scheduled 11 straight games before their bye...
