WHAT POSITION IS THE ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE FOR 2012?

I voted thinking QB would be the absolute must for a position in this years class. I have thought about it and yes I think every year you want to get an elite QB. With that said, I have changed my opinion to the DL. More specifically, I choose the DE position. I know we got a lot of commits last year and they look like very good and capable DE’s. Yet they have not stepped foot on the playing field so we do not know how well they will transition from high school to the SEC. Our pass rush last year was obviously not very effective. This put more strain on our LB’s and DB’s which lead to big plays down the field. I want an elite DE that can bull rush, come around end, fight off blockers, and a person who allows us to get pressure without having to bring our LB’s every play.

Is there a timetable on his decision?

I haven't heard anything on a timetable for his decision. He hasn't mentioned making a decision any time soon. I imagine he will wait a while. He will take visits. He has visited Bama several times and may camp here in the summer. His decision will likely come down to UA and UGA. Like I said he grew up in a Bama family, he was born in Mobile and moved to GA when he was 2. He followed both schools growing up.

I'll go with the following. The more I think about it, I'm changing my mind. All of this is with the disclaimer that we always need every position. I'm looking at what position is in most dire need in 2012 compared to the average year.

1. Nose tackle. In 2012, we're slated to return two true NTs - Jesse Williams (who will be a senior) and Brandon Ivory (who is a work in progress). If Williams pans out, it's not out of the question that he could declare for the draft. If he doesn't pan out, we'll certainly need someone. Ivory is still a project. So, landing an elite guy capable of playing early is vital to this class. I think we are aware of what happens when there is not a true elite NT in our defense.

2. OLB. We're already pretty thin, but we're losing Jerrell Harris and Alex Watkins after Fall 2011. That means, at best, we're looking at having three SAM LBs in Spring 2012, and two of those might be at other positions - Sunseri and Calloway. Atchison should return at SAM. We could possibly move an ILB out to SAM, but none of them are really ideal SAM LBs. If Sunseri and Calloway both play SAM, and both develop well and quickly, then this need could fall down the list quite some way.

3. CB. We will likely be losing 3 of our 4 top CBs this year - Menzie, Jones, and Kirkpatrick. Even if Kirkpatrick comes back, we'll be losing him the next year, along with possibly Milliner. For a position that requires such a high level of learning and reps, we need to get some guys seasoned to prepare for their departures. Right now, we only have 3 guys getting ready for that - John Fulton, Jabriel Washington, and Chris Jones. That's good, but I think we need 2 solid CBs to prepare for the exodus over the next 2 seasons. If we don't land 2 solid CBs, then we could be hurting real soon here.

4. QB. However, I think if we land another prospect like Ely, we'll be fine here. That is to say, we don't need an elite, ready to play now guy. We can stomach a brainy guy who needs some physical development. Depth at QB is never bad. But, it will not break our class if we don't sign a top 5 QB, particularly if both McCarron and Sims stay.

Other positions may vary, depending on how guys develop (which the coaches already have an idea about, it's just that we don't).

- If none of our DEs develop, then we'll certainly have a need there, but we have some real potential there. If some of the potential materializes, we should be fine to sign a few "high potential guys" just like we do every year.
- If none of our WRs develop, then again, we'll have a need, but we still have plenty of guys that are expected to really contribute by 2012 - Deandrew White, Blake Sims, Kevin Norwood, and Kenny Bell to name the main ones. Marvin Shinn and Bradley Sylve also have some pretty good expectations. Again, we always need a few. Just not sure this year is a year of particular need here.
- We always need bodies on the OL, so signing one or two interior guys and one or two tackles is always a priority, and not signing these can hurt any class. I just don't know if we have any particular need on the line this year that is unique.
- At running back, we don't have an Ingram or Richardson right now, but we are pretty stacked with young talented guys. Again, we need to sign one or two RBs with some potential, but if we don't land a top 5 RB, I won't be worried.

Nice run down, informative.

Sounds like we'll do a lot better than this.

Crimson your right it sounds like we are in great shape to land one or possibly two elite Qb's for this class, but I think Danish was saying if everything fell through we would be ok for at least a year or two to come. Good job Danish of going over each position and breaking them down.

Gotcha, bud. Given the uncertainty surrounding our numbers at this position, I'd still push for the best quarterback we can get, when we can get them. No offense to Philip, but he was a surprise commitment after a bunch of other kids had turned us down.

This year, we have the inside track on at least two studs. Next year may not offer the same opportunity. Let's get 'em while we can.

Yeah, we always want the elite QB especially when one is in our backyard. In terms of capitalizing on opportunity, then yeah, Winston is huge.

Another nice post, and those are great points about the nose tackle spot.

Danish,
good points on the NT as well as DB earlier.

I think OLB depends on where Depriest ends up. There is some talk of him playing the SAM spot, at least being tried there for next year. Either way, the coaching staff has brought in several LBs in every class Saban has put together, and I don't imagine this year will be any different, so you're probably right. I also imagine Saban will continue the search for a true JACK, another position he has looked for every year.

We needed to sign a QB this year, hence the late offer to Mettenberger, a guy with a spotty history. Considering potential for injury or transfer of either AJ or PS between now and next, if we don't sign a quality QB or even two in 2012, we are seriously flirting with disaster. Even signing one next year, it may be a little late to get him developed in time to be able to take over a starting role in the next couple of years. Wouldn't be shocked to see a push for a JC guy or another transfer.

With the offense that we run, I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't land a big time QB. CNS has won two national championships with GMac and Mauck and neither of them were considered big time QBs. Now landing a big time QB could change our offense somewhat and make it better overall but at least CNS has proven that he doesn't need the big time QB to win the big one. I still think we land two really good QBs this year.

I'm just worried about our DB depth after too long b/c SEC offenses are starting to change to more pass based

I feel we may be forgetting that we do have Nick Perry and J. Williams at Safety, both are very talented and if they grasp the coverages there is no reason they both should have success in a few years. At QB the well will be pretty dry after our first string if we dont land an elite QB this year.

Landing Lambert would be huge. He could end up being an even better QB prospect than Phillip Sims. Landing Lambert and Winston would seriously be unfair. I would feel bad that one of them would probably never get to start at Bama.

We have been lucky the past few years as pertains to QB injuries. Remember the year Brodie went down and our season went in the tank? I think both guys will have an excellent chance to start at some point and time in their careers at Bama. I vote QB.

This is exactly why I am in the tiny percentile that voted DL. Of course my personal belief is that DL should always be first priority and OL second. ;);)

I don't know if that will be the case. If we keep both Sims and McCarron and add Winston and Lambert, then some will never start for Alabama. I know all it takes is one injury to move everybody up the depth chart, but we would have a RS Sop, RS Fr, T Fr (Ely), with two more coming in. Now if we only had a SR QB I could see us pulling a couple of top QB's this year, but with having such talented young QB's I think we may add one top QB and one game manager. I think we are in good shape if we only add one top QB. Now if every one leaves and transfers then we need help, but you can’t have 4 top QB's and someone not be left out. That’s why it is so hard to sign two top QB's in one class.

There isn't a must have for 2012. We'll get some from each position. But even if we didn't recruit one person next year, we'd be okay for the 2011 season. Probably 2012 too.
