Kirk Herbstreit: Rising Tide and sinking Tigers | al.com
"My Auburn fans out there who thought I was the toast of the town aren't going to like me this year," Herbstreit said. "I think this team is really going to struggle. I think if they get to a bowl game, it would be a great year."
Meanwhile, Herbstreit believes Alabama's grown-up defense will return to its 2009 form and help the Crimson Tide win the SEC. But he has questions for Alabama, too.http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/08/kirk_herbstreit_rising_tide_an.html
"Really look to see whether Dont'a Hightower, not just is he healthy, but does he become the dominant force, that alpha like Ro (Rolando McClain) was?" Herbstreit said. "He kind of policed that (2009) team. Whether Dont'a can be that kind of guy is something that I'm anxious to see."

That is spot on. Without Dont'a taking over the D like Ro did, we will not win the west.

Herbstreit believes Alabama needs to know who its quarterback is by the Penn State road trip on Sept. 10.

"Can you platoon guys on the road in that atmosphere? Sure, it can be done," Herbstreit said. "But it's something I think can create some anxiety for an offense. I think eventually someone would have to emerge. You'd think McCarron because he's been around a couple years and knows the offense. But everybody loves Sims' talent."

Kind of echoes my sentiment from another thread.

I think Donte' is an extremely important key to our defensive unit this year. Will he be another coach on the field like Ro? Remains to be seen, as previously stated, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him down as much as up this year especially if Sentimore doesn't return. Upshaw, Mosely and Nico have a good deal of experience now. Lester is a ball hawk with an attitude and Barron is NFL ready now. In other words, I'm not concerned with our front seven rotation with two of the best tried and true safety's in the nation. This defensive unit, staying healthy, will be one of the best we've ever had, and that's saying a lot.RTR!!!

This time last year, I thought Kirk was out of his mind when he was singing AU's praises.

Let's see how this year's prognosticating turns out. I'd be tickled beyond belief if AU couldn't get to a bowl. :biggrin2:

If they make it to a bowl game this year they have better coaching than most of us think they have.

I'm not sure that Hightower is the needed leader. Seemed like either Nico or CJ were taking that spot last year. Nico will be a junior, so he is more than capable of being a leader for this team.

In regards to AU - they may not be bowl eligible by the end of October...

I would not be shocked, should Auburn win 7 or 8 games. Surprised, but not really shocked. I expect them to win no more than 6. We'll see.

What we need on defense (and offense for that matter) are individuals that will take it upon themselves to step up when the chips are down, and be a leader both verbally and in action. I think we lacked that last year. We had plenty of talent, but when things got down, we didn't have enough guys that would get in the other players ears and chew them out for mistakes, and keep them in line. Rolando and other guys like Mike Johnson provided that in 09, but it really grew out of the Florida/Utah games from 2008. So, I expect the same growth this year from the struggles of last year.

As long as they've got Malzahn they've got a chance to win a few games they're not suppose to. But I agree with most here. It's going to be tough sleddin' for the sheep fornicators to have a successive season.

CGM is going to help them some.

I heard an Aubie say last week, "We beat Alabama next year. After everything that has gone on this year, we are going to beat them." With that mindset, I see AU losing to MSU, Clemson, USCe, LSU, Arkansas and Georgia because of major payback. That doesn't even include the payback that Alabama is going to want, or what UF can do with them. That is why I can easily see them losing 6-8 games this year.

If we lose to them, we've suffered massive injuries to key players, or the world has turned upside down. I'm assuming this charmin chunker was talking about the tree fiasco. I'd be shocked if that really even resonated with their players come November, especially if the trees make it as some believe they will. What will resonate with our players is the humiliation from last year.

I'm not sure if he meant the trees or the Cam story. Doesn't matter. Bama will win this year because this past year was too embarrassing for too many players. I don't think the coaching staff will let them forget...

Yeah, I was laughing when he said Auburn would win the west. Then they did and I had to go back and look at the season. We gave up too much and had injuries at the wrong time. AU snuck up on everyone. This year is MUCH different. All those road games and having to find an Oline. Let alone their defense was already shot last year. That schedule will undermine everything that they will be trying to do. No surprises though if they win 7 games, they'll be sweating to get that. I'll give them .500 and maybe a trip to a .500 bowl game because they were champions. That's if they are still champions when the NCAA is done.

I think Kirk is right and wrong. Right that Arkansas could likely be the au of 2011. Fortunately we get them in BDS and should win but arky could easily win 10-11 games. Kirk is wrong about au. IMO they win at least 6 games which gets them a minor bowl, but could win 7-8 games, they did lose a lot but they do have some talent.

I think if Auburn doesn't make it to a bowl game their coaching is awful or their recruiting classes have been greatly overestimated or a combination of the two. If they have recruited as well as everyone says and they don't make it to a bowl game then they are doing a poor job of coaching and developing players. You can give them three wins already. Then they only need to win three of the remaining nine games.

I'm convinced that Auburn has a good OC, but the positions coaches are garbage. I'm tired of hearing about all this talent that they have...

No way Auburn makes it to a bowl game. I don't think they'll win a game against an SEC West opponent and maybe against any SEC opponent, east or west.

Cam Newton, like him or not, was literally one of, if not THE biggest difference makers in college football history.

Without him last year AU would have lost to Miss. State, Clemson, Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU, Georgia, and Alabama.

He, literally and personally was the difference between a win or loss in those games.

Take him away and consider that they lost almost their entire offensive line and several stellar defensive linemen and it really doesn't matter if they have a Malzhan or not, they're going to be horrible.

Even their running backs who looked so impressive last year were able to do so because defenses were so worried about Newton.

I agree with Herbie and think it's going to be a long long long season for the University of West Georgia.

sip

I'm in total agreement with Herbstreit on this one. Bama will not realize our full potential without some strong leadership on the field. *U will likely win no more than 5 games (they beat Utah St, Fla Atl, Miss, and Samford, which = 4 wins; they lose to Clemson, USCe, Ark, Fla, LSU, Ga, and Bama, which = 7 losses; tossup whether they win/lose against Miss St).

Do you think *u got their money's worth out of him? And, if the NCAA does what a lot of us think they should do, will *u still think they got their money's worth? I think they will, because they will always say that they know who won the games on the field and what Championships they were awarded for their efforts. It matters not to them that they did it with professionals (imo).
