Hey guys,
I recently purchased a helmet and need to change the numbers on it from 17 to 14.
Does anybody have any tips on how to do so easily or without compromising the paint?
included a picture of the helmet below.
Thanks in advance and RTR!

Get a hair dryer and warm it up a little. I've applied decals to a helmet and we always would rub them to get them hot to make the glue adhere better. I'm sure it works in reverse. Then as the previous poster said, something to get the excess glue off. You might rub some of the cleaner on a spot on the inside to make sure it doesn't damage the paint. If I'm not mistaken, that Goo Gone is citrus based.

The hair dryer works well if you warm them they should come off fairly easily. That is, if they have not been clearcoated over the top. I can't tell from the picture, but sometimes they are done that way to create more gloss, depth and lessen the edge of the decals. After removing the decals something like a mild solvent or the Goo Gone should dissolve any residual adhesive. I've done a few myself since I'm in the automotive refinish industry. When placing the new ones on, use some tape to help guide you like notebook lines. It'll help keep them square. The 7 is easy to look like it's leaning if you don't line it off first. If you do get it on and want it clearcoated, a local body shop can do it. If it is clearcoated enough, you can bury the decals where they can't be felt.

Thanks for the advice, guys. Any other advice is welcome, too.
When I'm re-applying the "4" on both sides of the helmet, is there any trick or secret to it? Do i need some sort of small roller or perhaps a small plastic puddy knive so it will go on smoothly and won't bubble up? Just really paranoid about scratching the helmet.

You shouldn't need any tool like a squeegee for that size decal. If you have some extras, try a few on another surface for practice. Just start at bottom and work to top to avoid wrinkles. Good luck.

I've changed numbers out before, and the hardest part was getting the numbers straight. I just changed a chrome mini helmet that had 12 on it to 3 since I'm getting Trent to sign it. I used Goo Gone on it, and it did fine. The paint was not effected at all on the two I've changed.

Also, if you are using the thicker 3 mil decals like are on the real helmets then you shouldn't have to worry about wrinkles or anything. They are pretty stiff since they are laminated.

Personally I thought about taking my "Got 13?" Shirt and taking a Sharpie and just crossing out the "3" writing in a "4". I am hoping to get CNS to autograph for me.

I'd send the equipment manager at the University an email asking for suggestions, experience counts.

Make sure to get all the Goo Gone off with dishwashing liquid. It is greasy and can keep your new decal from sticking properly! Make sure to share a pic of the finished product!!

Where could I get a pair of 4's for a mini helmet? Currently is has 12 on it.

I have seen some on ebay, but you have to buy like the complete set of numbers. I have a plotter that I use to make decals, and I just made me up some #3's the other day. They aren't the thicker ones, but they worked fine for the mini helmet. I would be happy to send you a set.

As Jess Mentioned, Ebay is a decent place for the sticker #'s... Be sure you read the auction carefully and let the seller know exactly what you want because some of them have the option of buying full-size helmet stickers and mini helmet stickers.

Search "Alabama helmet decals".

Absolutely on this idea! Not only could he help with removal, but could probably tell you how they measure the location to affix the decal in the "proper" spot.
