Do you think Penn St. should name the stadium after Paterno?

This will probably spark a lot of hot feelings based on how he exited, but it wouldn't bother me. He did a lot for Penn State, both on and off the field, that cannot be ignored based on one mistake, albeit a huge mistake.

Penn State has a lot of work to do before people can move on from the things that happened. I don't see how naming the stadium after Paterno would hurt that. If they were thinking of doing it before the controversies, they should still do it.

I could be wrong, but I believe PSU has completely disassociated itself with Joe Paterno

That would be a bad move imo, unless you want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. They should wait a few years and then rename the stadium, not the field.

Imagine trying to rewrite their history by making Paterno an unperson? Wouldn't be much left.

That's up to them. I won't be mad either way. Like someone else already posted, You can't sweep all the good things he did for the school and community over one mistake. Not condoning the mistake he (and the rest of the administration) made but haven't we all done things we regret? probably not to that level..................but.

I was getting my oil changed today and was flipping through some Sports Illustrateds from last fall. The back column in one issue was about words you hear only in football. One example was "ensuing", as in the ensuing kickoff.

Then the writer used the word "unmolested". He meant it as a runner went unmolested into the end zone, but now that word and football have a whole new connection. Interestingly, I think that same issue had a brief preview of the Bama-Penn State game.

The Woody Hayes Athletic Center is an indoor athletics training facility of The Ohio State University. It was dedicated in November 1987 in memory of the late Woody Hayes, Ohio State's football coach, and renovated in a significant expansion in 2005–2007. The facility contains an indoor field which is 400 feet (120 m) long, 220 feet (67 m) wide and 65 feet (20 m) high and is covered by All-Pro Turf. The field is used by the football, baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer teams

Hayes is the most notable coach (besides Paterno) I could think of who was fired for something other than losing games, perhaps there are others.

If in 20 or 30 years this whole thing has blown over, and something has come out to clear Paterno's name. Absolutely you name the stadium after him, heck, in that case you change the name of the school to Paterno State University. However, with all the negative publicity that has gone on, it's just way to soon to bring it up. IMO

Pedophile Field at Sodomy Stadium sounds about right.

This is a sick post.

If the PSU people want to name the field/stadium after CJP, I'd have no problem with that. He meant a lot to PSU, and one mistake, albeit bad, should not take away from all the good he has done for the university. He was truly loved by all their fans, rightfully so, And I don't believe he should be thrown under the bus just because he didn't report the crime in the correct chain of command. I know it should have been handled better, but to destroy his legacy for a (bad) mistake in the last year of his coaching career. So sad.

There's no way to quantify the human damage which occurred after his decision to do nothing and kick the matter upstairs without followup. The horror cannot be balanced by past good. Just ask the catholic church about their similar abuse problems. Others are free to disagree, but my belief is that he has probably eclipsed all of the good in the past. I'm still thinking it over. I believe the whole US is still thinking it over and trying to understand...

I agree with you. Ignoring him will not make his accomplishments go away.

But maybe they should purge his name from all the record books. If you do not want his name associated with your stadium then why would you want his name associated with your university?

Suppose something like this surfaces about Coach Bryant. Do we tear down his statues and just call it Denny-Denny Stadium?
