Re: Four Bama football players arrested - was progress of Eddie Williams & B. Callowa

So we should follow what Auburn does? I'd rather Coach get all the facts and talk with the kids about how they can help themselves moving on outside of Alabama (whether that is after jail time or not). Plus the country has pretty much said we cheat in every way possible and will jump on us at the first chance they get. Forget what the country says. Due process is the right way to handle this situation.
They have signed confessions admitting to the crimes. He can help them transition to another school after they have been kicked off the football team. We can just agree to disagree but to me swifter action should have been taken, unless the reason for not doing it is the fact that Coach is out of town.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested - was progress of Eddie Williams & B. Callowa

Scarbinsky had an article about this and I hate to say I kind of agree with him. Although Bama fans might know what Saban's history of indefinite suspension is, most casual fans are going to think that it means he is suspending them to figure out how to save them or something like that.

Given the confessions I really thought that it would be easy to get rid of the 3, Calloway could potentially get another shot but his prior arrest makes that less likely. What I'm hoping was since apparently Coach was away on vacation he is waiting to get back into town and get all information before making a decision. Some of those past indefinite suspensions lasted a long time, I don't want to see that in this case.
I'm not sure that the MJ conviction on Calloway will weigh all that heavily. It would be worse, if it were something else. The fact remains that all teams, hell, all universities, have drug problems and MJ is the most pervasive. We have an internal drug testing program and it has gradations and incentives/punishments. It's only the NCAA which has the "one positive test and you're out for a year" policy, which, to my mind is not a real program at all. When I said the others were in hot water, that's part of it. Calloway's problem is really not so much his prior drug offense as trying to explain his use of an ACT card with someone else's photo on it...

Yeah I don't think the MJ is that big of a deal but the bottom line is it is still illegal and that makes two times he has violated the law and been caught. If he had no knowledge of the circumstances of how the guys got the card I think he could have a chance to work his way back into good graces. If he knows it came from a violent robbery then to me he is probably done. He admitted to knowing it wasn't his obviously but to me his level of knowledge about the circumstances of how the other players got it is important. IMO he is the only one with a chance for redemption.

Scab's article is his usual troll piece designed to get hits/traffic only. I doubt he even agrees with the troll pieces he typically writes.

I think you are confusing what delusional rival fans may think (Auburn fans) compared to the vast majority of casual fans or fanatical followers of say USCw, Texas, Michigan, or even Montana. Most people know there is a process that has to play out before a player is kicked off the team and expelled from school. That process normally takes more than 2 or 3 hours to play out. I doubt this issue will take long.
This. If you dismiss a player and then exonerating info comes to light, you look like an idiot. If you suspend them, all options remain on the table. The suspension is even more appropriate if Coach Saban is, say, out of town and not in a position to talk to the players himself.

We are a rather large target. It wouldn't matter how he played it in the end. Even if he'd rushed to judgment and terminated them immediately, he would have received the same degree of criticism. After it all shakes out, it's not going to matter...

Knowing the greatest coach in college football and possibly football period, I can see this giving him the opportunity to get the guys refocused and motivated for another championship season! He will use it as a teaching tool no doubt! ;)

If it had to happen, better now than during the season next fall. Hopefully this will help the team refocus for next season.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I'm truly sad that our football program, which brings so much joy and pride to the University, gave these disgusting thugs an opportunity to be on campus and inflict violence on innocent students. I'm sure that Coach Saban and staff feel the same way. Calloway might get his shot at redemption, the others I seriously doubt it. Goodbye and good riddance.

Coach Saban is not going to try and over ride university policies and pull the trigger without following protocol.
As much power as he has he's still very respectful of those in higher positions within the university system and the guidelines to follow in a situation like this.
He's doing the right thing and it will all work out in the end.
sip

Earle, the "I was asleep in the car" defense seems pretty lame. Hard to imagine that BC didn't know the plan, that he was cut out of every conversation concerning pummeling fellow students, much less his use of the card.

I think Williams will be in prison for a few years. I agree Calloway might get another chance. The other 2 should serve some jail time at the least.

Exactly. This is a rare case of Captain Obvious®

If you find yourself thinking too hard with this one you are just looking for an excuse....

Already time to start moving ahead and leaving these guys behind us IMO. We have 16 to worry about.

Is he saying he was asleep in the car? I saw his tweet about being asleep but I figured that was back at Bryant hall and they woke him up or something. If he was in the car my thoughts on his chances of staying just changed significantly.

Just finished reading each post & I'm really surprised at some of you. Please don't tell me not to make fun of API, Gators, 10RC, Ohio State & others when they have trouble. There OS a BIG difference here. Coach Saban you know will handle these players he runs the program not some 5 star whatever. No cover up here the manis on vacation. I went deer hunting3 days with no phone, radio or tv. I needed it.
The players will get what they deserve you can count on that Because History has told us that about CNS.

We have a lot to be proud of still a lot of Great kids on this team & CNS will use something bad to tech them something good.
just look at this kid OJ Howard & the way he carries himself, he is just a kid & already stepping up as a leader.

I don't wish anything on these 4 other than justice fair & fast.

They stopped being a part of the Team when they broke the law.

Im coming to A Day & the kick off classic. Looking forward to seeing the next great team.

A few days ago everyone was excited about the new class, that has not changed at all.

We got 4 of 85 that don't know how to behave, so they will get a New opportunity going forward without the concerns of TEAM!

I undertstand the feelings of those folks that would like to jettison the players as soon as possible. But I guess our coach and thankfully our university have a process for dealing with really sorry situations like this one. I have the utmost faith in CNS that he will handle things in a proper and respectful way.

Duh... You're absolutely right. There's nothing that says explicitly that BC was in the car. Still doesn't fly that his teammates would not have clued him in.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I'll admit I haven't read all 34 pages of this thread. My first reaction was shock and anger. Shocked that anyone could do such. Beating a fellow student for snack money. what?!?! Anger at these guys tarnishing the name of the University of Alabama, a place I dearly love.

My second reaction was hurt. I hurt for the other players that before Sunday night would have called these guys friends and brothers. Guys that good guys trusted. They had to, that's what a team is all about. In my travels with the team I get a small glimpse into these guys having each others' backs. Imagine now how torn they feel, almost like these guys were traitors all along.

I had many interactions and conversations with these guys, but I won't claim to "know" them as I only flew one season with them and they were all younger. I do know Eddie Williams had a smile that could light up the whole airplane. I always felt bad that he didn't crack the rotation. One of the first conversations I had with him was about his time in high school and his recruitment.

Just breaks my heart that these very guys that appeared to be nothing more than kids playing football hurt SO many people. This is just tough!
