Link: Coach Saban to fans: Stay the full game or give tickets to someone who will!

We go to about 1-2 games a year and stay till well after the game...every game. Even the Thursday night game against Georgia State a few years back.

To me it would be like walking out of a movie theatre because the movie is great...but you know there is a predictable ending...so you figure you have no need to see the end.

First of all - I would absolutely love to buy tickets to a game. I would drive up from Dallas, party all nigh the night before, tail gate for about 3 hours before the game, have a couple of coctails, watch the entire game, celebrate or cry after the game and party all night.

To each his on. This argument is much like the one about being a "real" fan or not. You're not a real fan if you don't (insert someone's made up criteria). Fans go to football games for entertainment. Everyone's level of entertainment is different. Some people come hell or high water are going to stay to the very end no matter what. And that is fine. That is their right. They purchased the ticket. But for other people their entertainment level ends when the game is so bad out of hand that the coach is getting upset on the sidelines because HIS PLAYERS are scoring. When it gets to where the coach of my favorite team doesn't want the team to score then the game is over. Many people do not find entertainment in that and are ready to go. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I understand the "supporting the team" thing. Well many people "supported the team" when they opened their wallet, forked out the money to buy a ticket, showed up and cheered. Personally, I would have stayed the entire game. We stayed the entire game last year when we played Michigan. But I don't look down on others who don't. I completely understand. Football is a passion for many people. But when it's gotten to the point where we're looking down on people or reprimanding them for leaving a game early when the game has gotten so out of hand that the goal isn't even to score anymore then it's gotten a bit ridiculous.

The bright side of this is what a great problem to have. Complaining because fans are leaving early due to absolute maulings on the field is a good problem to have.

Thanks for making this point so well.

Here's how this should work. For the type of fans that can't be troubled to stay four quarters, just don't go to the game. It's that simple. As Saban said, give away your ticket, or sell it to someone else. But, if sitting through four quarters just isn't your thing, then neither is going to a football game, because those happen to be four quarters.

I can not respect the fans that defend the idea of taking up a seat just long enough for no one else to have it, but not actually using it the entire game. I'll give a break to the elderly that can't manage to cheer for four quarters, but come on, sitting for four quarters is too hard? May be you shouldn't be outdoors then. Some fanbases stand the entire four quarters, asking a fan who is monopolizing a seat to use it isn't too much to ask, period.

Edit: And to the people that have kids or old people to care for or what not. May be you shouldn't be out late to begin with... once again, no one is forcing these people to go to the games.

Coach might want to be real careful how far he pushes this one. I know a lot of people from my home town (Meridian) go to the Bama home games. They take their wife and kids. It is about an hour and a half drive with normal traffic. It is probably over two hours with game day traffic. If the game is absolutely not in question (like the Arkansas game) then their (the fans) mindset shifts to trying to avoid getting back extremely late so they can get the kids in bed and be back up to go to church the next morning. To be honest, they paid for their tickets so now chastising them for not staying at a game that has turned into a scrimmage may not be the wisest thing to do.

Well, to be honest, I went to many night games when I lived in Atlanta and not once did I leave early. Even when it meant that I got home a 2 in the morning.
If you don't plan to stay for the home game because it is a night game then give the tickets to someone who will.

The bold part is so obnoxious I don't know how to respond in language that won't get me banned.

I have all the respect in the world for Coach Saban, but I have a very difficult time staying for the entire 4 quarters, during a mauling, if the team takes their foot off the gas. I'm not saying to run up the score but, regardless of what CNS says, HE DOES TAKE HIS FOOT OFF OF THE GAS DURING BEATDOWNS and that can get really boring!!! I mean, he was literally up in arms when Derek Henry scored that last touchdown. Does he really expect everyone to stay interested if the playcalling becomes boring?!?!?!

Good for you!

Some of us head out a few minutes early to get a jump start on the next day of church or work, or maybe because if we're an extra two hours late hitting the hay, we're worthless until next Thursday. How dare anyone suggest that we shouldn't have tickets.

I'll repeat this again, if there were really and truly 100,000 people who wanted to sit all the way through a 52-0 game on a Saturday night, they'd already be there. Newsflash - they don't exist.

I know, asking people to not get up and leave in the middle of an event is just so cruel.

So, if I go to a kindergarten play, we're good if I walk out in the middle right? Church? No problem if I get up and walk out in the middle right? Graduation speech? Sorry I just decided this was too boring... Hey, this bride is taking a long time to get down the isle, time to go.

The fact is, that it is common decency to stay through the entirety of a given event.

Then go to church and skip the game. Problem solved.

When the head coach has to say something about it, I'd suggest it's an issue that needs to be examined.

The obvious difference is that in your examples, those are free events that people attend to honor someone. This is entertainment that people paid their own money to attend. It is more comparable to attending a movie, concert, or the circus.

Please sell me your ticket/s and I'll drive 700+ miles and stay for the ENTIRE game and soak in all the Crimson Tide electricity that's pervasive throughout the stadium and campus until the fat lady sings, I mean Rammer Jammer! It may be too late for the Viles game but you never know.

Are you a Professor on THE campus and bored with Crimson Tide football? I NEVER get tired or BORED with the Crimson Tide winning! I've been there since Coach Bryant returned and even before: the "Ears" era, the Dumbose era, the RopaDope era with the Fran man, the I'ma Rolling in Bed coach, and the name I won't mention because of his incompetence as a Head Coach but apparently a nice guy.

I really do like seeing the Tide dominate and then put in the FUTURE Tiders to see what they can do.

I can deal with games better when in the stadium than listening to all the crap dished out by talking heads on CBS/ESPN.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. People who pay for their tickets can leave when they want. If coaches on the sidelines have the time to worry about whether the stands are full or not in a game that was over in the third quarter. Then what does that say? The game was over and it was no longer a game but a scrimmage where the object was not to score. If people don't want to sit for another hour and a half to watch that I understand.

Clearly you're not a real fan.

I really believe this is mostly a student section (fraternity section) problem. Only on the complete blowouts do the paying customers clear out in hordes. The fraternities clear out on a regular basis.

Because those actions, when administered in large numbers, are impacting the player's mindset and also the recruiting efforts made by our staffs. What are you going to tell the players or potential recruits as a coach? "Hey, give it all you've got for 60 minutes for four quarters and don't try to pay any attention to all the fans walking out of the stadium by the third quarter".

I get that each fan have his/her priorities in different ways but when it comes to making negative impact on the Bama program, then I'd definitely take an issue with it, period.
