OL Viane Talamaivao Decommits from Alabama, Commits to USC

Re: *** 2014 4-Star OL Viane Talamaivao Commits to Alabama***

Twitter blocked here at work, but he tweeted that there was no place like Alabama, the fans, etc., thanked us and said God bless......

he'd rather play here, but it'd be too much for his family....

Great family and kid

I think this is the second time a star lineman changed his commitment from us after Lane Kiffin was fired from a university. James Stone at Tennessee being the first.

Re: OL Viane Talamaivao decommits from Bama, commits to USC (distance from home)

Can't blame the kid for wanting to stay home. Regardless of how USC has stunk it up the past few years, they are still a very prestigious program--especially for Cali kids. Good Luck to him!

Somewhere, Verne and Gary just breathed a sign of relief. One less name they have to learn while calling Bama games.

Re: *** 2014 4-Star OL Viane Talamaivao Commits to Alabama***

I just never thought we would end up with any of the big Polynesian So. Cal offensive linemen. Those guys are staying home. I don't blame them one bit. I think the Polynesian guys have a very strong culture and the Samoan community is large in So. Cal and they basically want to stay home. I even think a couple of those players committed to Bama without even stepping one foot on campus or ever being in the South period. Not trying to be a downer just stating the way I see it.

This is why I was hoping to keep him.

Though disappointing, I don't think his decommittment really comes as a surprise to anyone. Could Brian Wallace out of Missouri possibly be a potential replacement?

Anyone think that win over Stanford did something?

More like level of comfort being closer to home. Some kids I think jump to different schools because of how a season is going, but as others have mentioned USC (and LA) has a good sized Polynesian culture. Much easier to fit in and be comfortable and close to family.

I think Wallace is seen more as an OT, than as a OG, but we have JC, McBride, Casher, and Ross P. that are all projected as interior guys. So we still have a good # of interior guys. I think we get Wallace because I believe there are concerns over Jackson and McBride (I don't know whether grade or flipping issue).

I figure we backfill/replace Viane with Wallace. In a way, this development might actualy help us. I keep hearing that LOTS of great players want to come here, and if we get caught up in a numbers game then of all our commits this one was probably one that we could afford to lose, no disrespect toward the kid intended at all.

I will never criticize a kid for changing his mind. Some kids don't want to be that far away from home, some kids don't flourish when starting or playing time is not automatic, or some kids just plain changed their mind. Good luck to him. Alabama will win with him or without him.

He just visited Tuscaloosa. His family was talking about how they are all Bama. They spent hundreds of dollars buying Bama gear. :conf2:
Did they say they spent hundreds of dollars? I believe his visit was an official. Even if they did spend a good deal of money on Bama gear, they didn't pay for the travel to Tuscaloosa since the visit was official.

His dad said they spent $500 on Bama gear because all they can find is a hat in Cali...

and the official visit is the recruit and one family member paid, by ncaa rules IIRC...
