Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

Anyone think that the Texas arrogance comes from the fact that a lot of their boosters are people who fell into money for sitting on top of oil? They're a few generations removed from shanty/trailer trash and don't know how to really run the world with all their money like old East Coast money...

Old money almost always has more sense, class and grace than new money. Not always, but almost.

I don't know where it comes from, but it is many generations old and deeply embedded in their culture.

All I know is I'm as confident that Coach Saban will retire at Bama, but, I sure wish he would get the extension on his contract signed..Cause it does get tiring reading about all the rumors being put out by the media..Cause the longer it goes on, and no matter how many times he tells recruits that he's staying & will retire at Bama..It's eventually going to hurt in recruiting..As long as these stories & rumors are out there..Rival coaches will use it against us in recruiting & recruits will believe the rumors over the man himself when he tells them they're not true & he's staying at Bama where he will retire..
With all due respect TideMan, signing that new contract will do absolutely nothing if Texas doesn't officially hire a new a coach this year. We seem to forget that this just happened last year, and here we are. If Mack stays another year, we'll hear this again next year. Its as simple as that. Texas will spew rumors, and the insecure folks in our fanbase will panic. Again. It may temporarily quiet things, but I doubt it. Saban's contract will never have a buyout, so the Texas side will always believe they can throw enough money to get him to leave.

As bad as I hate to say this for Mack Brown, because it is his career on the line, but the best thing that can happen is for Texas to fire Mack this year and hire another coach. I'd even say that it would be good for us for that coach do well and win quickly. That would buy enough time for CNS to finish his career here and ride off into the sunset. That is really the only way we won't hear this again.

How ironic that William F. Buckley, a hero of mine, was a calm East Coaster prep whose family got rich from....Texas oil money.

Yup..When you're born into money & never had to work aday in your life..That's why they have ego's the size of Texas itself..I reckon that's why kid of rich folks are more arrogant than their parents are usually..Spolied to the bone & they don't try to hide it either..

And it is fascinating how the fates of Texas football programs (not just UT, but the other programs as well) have risen and fallen in rough correlation to oil prices. From the oil boom of the 70's and early 80's to the cheap oil and the bust of the late 80's and 90's, then back to the high prices in the 2000's and now.

Texas braggadocio was noted by regulars from other Southern states in the War between the States, just a generation after their independence. Honestly, it's not difficult to find quotes and instances predating the Alamo. It's almost as if every insufferable boor in the South fell in love with cattle, cottonwood trees, and scrub brush somewhere in the early part of the nineteenth century and they all migrated at the same time. The South's big 'movement', you might say.

Seen this enough, I've got to speak to it... I don't believe this WILL come up again next year if MB somehow retains his job. It's my firm belief that Saban is leveraging for SOMETHING right now... and he'll eventually get it. As long as no other issues like this crops up between now and next year, there's no reason to endure this situation again.

Yeah, but they didn't have anything to back it except vast empty spaces, big hats and cattle. For a few decades they've had the oil...

An old comedian, Grady Nutt, used to tell a joke about Texas. He said "there was miles and miles of "Nuthin". The strangest thing to him was that Texans put up fences to keep your sumthin off of their nuthin."

Remember when Saban was vetting a staff for the Cowboys last year? smh...

the guy is just as likely to be calling around for potential assistants because of the yearly attrition alabama faces on staff

This tweet is so horribly composed I refuse to believe it is accurate. Someone with sources would be able to write a coherent sentence.
He runs a pay site - my guess is that most of his stuff has been to drive up site subscriptions.

So you think if Mack stays, and wins 7 or 8 game next year, this will magically go away? Saban may very well be leveraging for something right now, but everything we are actually hearing is coming from the Texas side. To this point we haven't heard a single word from Saban or his wife except "We're not leaving". The only thing that will change is the belief by some people on our side that this possibly has legs. The stories and rumors from the Texas side still will continue to come, media outlets will continue to run with them, recruits will continue ask CNS if he is staying, some of our fans will continue to freak out, and our rivals will squeal with glee with every mention of "Saban to Texas". That will absolutely happen just like it has the last 3 years.

Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

I don't know what they are really offering him, but why would he stay? If they are going to offer him a package well above that required in his contract, and he knows that they want him gone, what would drive him to stay other than spite?
Well, ego would certainly would play a part, I guess. He's repeatedly expressed his belief that Texas football was on the verge of being back to elite status, as is expected of any coach. Also, he probably feels some loyalty to the players in his program, not to mention his coaching staff. I'm sure that he feels hurt and betrayed by some boosters and such over the coup attempt currently happening, but if he isn't forced out, do you really think he'll agree with the thinking that the best thing for the UT program would be for him to retire quietly into the night? I figure that if he can somehow stay, he'll do just that...
