Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...
Woody Hayes used to be one of my favorite coaches until the bowl incident. I just think like JoePa, the powers that be let him stay tooooo long.
Woody is one of the top 10 head coaches in college football history, but he abslutely lost his mind when he got mad. My father used to tell me that it wasn't fair to judge him by today's standards. He should have controlled his anger better, but men (especially athletes) used their fists more than their brains and it was generally accepted - we, as a society, simply didn't frown on it the way that today's society does. We have become more civilized.
All that said, when he blew up on the camerman in the 1977 Michigan game, he should have been fired. The problem - we had just won the Big Ten for the 5th or 6th year in a row. Mt father said that he asked not to be fired after a loss to Michigan so they gave him another chance. It really blew up on everyone because it was the very next year that he hit the Clemson player. Sad for everyone, but he really needed to be shown the door. It also changed the way that coaches were expected to behave across the country.
I was young when all this happened, but it followed our program for years.
