Re: New Discussion Thread on Possible Coaching Changes...

It's actually in Ooltewah, NE of Chattanooga. Although there are products which are worse (Twinkies), the nutrition on those things aren't pretty, about a third of the calories from fat and not good fats at that. A close relative of mine had a position of high responsibility there for many years. He warned me never to eat anything coming out of that plant. Of course, he was highly selective about food, being an Adventist (as are the owners of that plant).
In honor of that I just opened an oatmeal and so far no problems ;)

A caller into Finebaum just said something I've not read or heard. This guy's friend owns a car dealership in Tuscaloosa. He said his friend told him Saban is going to open a Mercedes dealership between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Finebaum said he had someone tell him the same.
The folks at Crown aren't going to be happy to hear that.

Didn't Tuscaloosa have a M-B dealer once upon a time?

By the way - I would think a white or blue OCBD with charcoal or grey trousers would work splendidly with your black watch jacket. I'm mad jealous of that, by the way - that jacket is one of my thrift store holy grails.

Maybe the caller was mistaken and meant Temple, TX north of Austin. (No blue font on phone) ;)

Thanks. The shirt isn't the problem. It's the tie. I have one that's workable with the jacket and one that I love. I only get to wear it about two or three times a year.

If Saban opens a MB dealership between T-town and Bham, I think his marketing plan should be to let everyone in the Southeast know that NOBODY has fresher M-Class, R-Class and GL-Class Benzes than Saban Mercedes! :biggrin2:

I can't speak to the validity of that, but this really gets into what staying at Alabama vs. leaving for Texas would mean for Saban.

No question, Texas could pay him more up front, between what Texas offered, and the boosters rounded up, I think that would come out ahead. They just have more people with more money, so it makes sense that under the table they are capable of besting Alabama with a lump sum.

However, look at the long term implications. Nick Saban, even if he doesn't win another title at Alabama would retire at Alabama a legend. The fans will always love him, the boosters would always support him, and he'd always be a tremendously marketable name throughout the southeast. Be it in television, speaking engagements, or yes, if he wants to put his name on restaurants or dealerships. You think for one second that fans/boosters wouldn't go out of their way to buy a Saban Mercedes, or to eat at Saban's? So, by staying at Alabama, he's insuring himself a lot of money for the rest of his life.

On the flip side, if he goes to Texas, he's a mercenary, and he'll have burned all the bridges in Alabama, but he'd also have greatly hurt his national image. It would be much worse than the Miami thing, because there are less mitigating circumstances, and there's more statements that would turn out to have been lies. All that would hurt his brand and earnings potential, and the expectation would be to win titles. If he wins titles, he could get back somewhat to where his reputation was, but in Texas he'll never be as popular as he is in Alabama. Even if he wins titles, the boosters would have already paid him, those titles were already bought, and if he doesn't win titles? They won't care one bit about Nick Saban.

There's a lot of logic to Alabama being the best long term investment for him.

Sadly, I would have to agree with you about many of our fans. I love OSU, and most of my friends went to OSU, but we generally don't care for the obnoxious culture that has taken over the area. To be clear, most of the students are great. It is the old school fans who are hard to stomach.

I am sorry that you had a poor experience. Just know that we are not all that way.
Woody Hayes used to be one of my favorite coaches until the bowl incident. I just think like JoePa, the powers that be let him stay tooooo long.

Wow, so now we are bashing the entire state of Texas. I am not a native Texan but lived here long enough to know, its a good place to live! Low cost of living, affordable housing, NO state income tax, excellent school districts and JOBS.
I agree with everything you said. It's just the arrogance of UTw people that sometimes gets to me. It was hard to get used to the "flatter than a flitter", whatever that is, Southeast Texas (esp. Houston) area. The rolling hills looks a lot better.

RTR91,
I wouldn't say that that isn't true but I don't know where someone would open a Mercedes dealership between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham? I can't see where that could be successful. There is practically nothing between the two cities, unless he would put it in Bessemer and I can't see a successful Mercedes dealership there.

Yeah, that incident changed my perception of him, as well. I will say, that I watched a clip on Coach Bryant's funeral the other day. It included a clip of Woody Hayes speaking. He recognized the greatness of Coach Bryant and his comments were very classy; I'll give him that much. Plus, the story about him running out of gas and making his assistants go across the state line to buy in Ohio instead of Michigan is priceless.

That's where it would be. Among ALLLLL the other dealerships right there. They all seem pretty successful.

Actually, it's "fritter." That's a word for a fried piece of bread. After that, it breaks down, since fritters cover a number of breads, containing meat, apples and other fruit, across the entire English-speaking world, UK, US, AU, NZ, etc. In the South, it normally referred to a simple fried corn cake, usually turned and mashed as it's fried, rendering it very flat...

"Flitter" is, I think, out of use. When I was a kid, people made their own off-road vehicles, four-wheeled and no body at all - just an engine, drive train, frame and wheels/tires. Frequently, people would use the "pancake" VW Bug air-cooled engine. We called them "flitters."

Edit: OOPS! Disregard all above. It's actually "flivver."
