I'm not going to link the article so that it doesn't get any more hits, but even Fox Sports has one out there trying to keep the rumor mill going.

People are just so desperate, it'd be amusing if it wasn't so sad.

I know they have money, but when did Texas become this big national brand? They are a strong, traditional program, but like all programs (including us), they have had their peaks and valleys.

What is the #1 football brand in the state of Texas? My guess would be that team that plays on Sundays and has a star on their helmets. We don't have a Jerry Jones here to worry about.

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if was mentioned. But,Herbstreit and Desmond Howard seem to think Jimbo Fisher and James Franklin are 2 top candidates for Tejas.

i read the article you are referring to. it is written by clay travis. it lists Saban as number 1 at 2-1 odds. the comment section from the shorthorn fans is the funniest part. the arrogance of these guys is just unreal.

Well now that Mack is officially retiring after the bowl game(official statement from the University and Mack Brown yesterday), the natives have been pacified.

Pretty much every inside source is saying that Mack was all set to come back but the big money guys went nuclear Friday night and Saturday on Bill Powers and Steve Patterson(new AD). Supposedly they had a meeting Saturday and pretty much forced Mack to retire.

Mack even took shots at the donors and orangebloods.com in his speech. To paraphrase he basically that it's time for him to step down because the fans are divided(read big money guys getting angry while a scant few still supported Mack) and that it's sad that reporters have to make things up(Chip Brown from orangebloods reporting earlier in the week that Mack was retiring which ticked off Mack.

So as it stands, Mack is officially retiring, no more melt down, and we are excited for a new coach. There are quite a few coaches on the list and the fans just want Texas to throw money at all the best and make them say no. That still includes Saban according to some insiders. Take it for what it's worth.

I think the way Mack Brown got pushed out of his position could damage Texas' coaching search process. Regardless of Mack Brown's perception within and around the program, he is a well respected figure in the coaching community. His words publicly could raise a huge red flag to their reasonable suitors.

In that regard, the OrangeBloods staff probably just really damaged their school with their incessant rumors about Nick Saban being a practical done deal despite Mack Brown not even being fired or retired. Of course, it was probably overzealous big-money boosters driving these rumors Chip Brown was shoveling down everyone's throats. Either way, I think Texas' boosters and media have severely damaged their slight odds of landing a top-tier, established head coach already coaching at a great job. If this was handled like real movers and shakers work - in the back rooms and out of the public eye - then I think they could have legitimately put up a fight for an established winner.

This isn't to say that I don't think they can hire a guy who will be a winner but they probably won't win the press conference by getting an established coach with name appeal. A James Franklin type hire isn't going to seem like as good of a move as it is because they've been bouncing absurd names as Mack's replacement for three years.

That's what happens when you let your boosters run your sports programs. Like I've said before, it's just another job and it wouldn't surprise me in the least to hear of Mack Brown landing a HC job at another D1 school.

Not to mention how they tried to run off the President. If you enjoy the intrigue of politics, and all the backstabbing that goes with it, this is the job for you.

The boosters seem to want to keep that from happening. It would be a major eggs-in-their-face moment to see Mack Brown win somewhere else after running a calculated torches-and-pitchforks campaign through the media. He's going to be a special consultant to the AD and likely getting that 5.4-5.6mil per year number for the remainder of his contract. In other words, they're trying to end his coaching career because he's not going to be consulting jack squat in that department. I wonder what his normal dress will be in that position? A white tee and pair of boxers at his home office desk?

I've never wish bad upon any school, but, have come to the point that I truly hope every decent HC turns the ShortHorns down & they end up hiring an assistant coach because every good HC in college & the NFL turns them down..I really hate them bout as much as I do the Barners..

Yeah, but I have a feeling that if they end up going the assistant route, we'll lose CKS. Especially with UTs love of all things Saban. Good for Kirby (I guess), but bad for Bama.
